SHOE.
Sp ecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1908.
Application filed January 20, 1908. Serial No. 411,764.
To all who? ix. may concern:
111* it. lmown that l, ll on'rmxo'rox S. TEL- FORD. a citizen oi ll'iti lnited Slates, residing at Duluth. in the county of St. Louis and Stall: ol' Minnumtn. have invcnted certain new and useful linpiovemeuts in Shocs, of which tho loll .-win;, is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for nhocs, which will act as a 'ierniancntly scrurcd FllOt' horn and which can be drawn out Sullicicntly to rendcr it. easy to insert the llLL'l of the foot. in the xhoc, as will be hereiii-after llitllt fully described and pointed out in the spociliration and claims.
Moro particularly this ini'rnlion i: adapted to lmv-cut or Oxford shoes, althotigh ohviouuly it can bu used on shoes of othcr forum if dasircd.
in operation this invention serves to pro dime a still upper edge above the counter at,
i the hocl u'hcn in .supeiiot position. and, after the foot lltlbi born inserted in thc shoe, may be pushed down. leaving the portion above the counter flexilihi.
Among the objects of my invention are simple and inexpensive construction, greater ot'l'r.-ct.i\'eness in opcration, and a device which is alvays ready for usc.
In tho accompanying; drawings forming part of this npccilicathvn, Figure l is a side view of my invention, showing tho attachment which I have chosen to term a slidc in position when not in use; Fi 2 is a longitudinal sidc view in section, slowing a do tail portion of a shoe and the slide in superior position when in use; Fig. 3 is an end view of the shoe, the position of the slide corresponding with that, shown in Fl 2,
and Fig. l a perspective View of the slide.
In the drawings-A represents a low-cut. uhoc having the hack of its counter portion constructed with thrcc plics of material termed thc quarter P), the stiffening counter (I and thc counter lining D, all of ordinary construction. These parts are secured together in tho usual manner at or near their uppcr ledges by moans of the scam E, and the stiffening counter terminates a short distance below said S'Cfll'lhfifl as to leave the edge at the scam flexible.
My iin'ention is applied 'to thccounter portion of thc shoe and comprises What I have chosen to town as before stated a slide D made of thin shcct metal or other suitable material forming a, substantial ly rigid plate having a flat pull arm 2 which is adapted to be held between the tlunnlrarul. forefinger at tho handle portion 3 when pulling on the shoe. The bllllt also has a pair of Sltlt. wings land 5 integral. with the pull arm and assuming a curvcd form similar to the circular or blurred inner surface of tho hocl of the shoe when in the position shown in Fig. l. The. alidv is ahown placed bclwenn tit counter and the quarter where it is free to move up and down. It may he placed between tho couutrr and countcr lining when desired. The stitching of the scam I?) around the uppcr edge of the plies at the hcol ol' the shoe ii; loft open to allow the pull arm to cxte'nd above the counter when in use. The quarter is notched at ti no tlrit whcn the glide is in towel-oil position the handle portion of the pull arm rectulcs substantially l'lush with the scam E.
The curvature of thc wings CUHfUI'JDlUg with the lit-cl when in lowurctl position, causes the sides of the shoe to expand slightly when the slide is in Sllpellul' position as chou'n in. Fig. thus extending the opening of the ahoc so that the foot can be more readily inserted therein. 'lhc inner surface of the pull aiiin forms a guido for the heel of the foot and acts as a shoe horn. The wings of tho slidc stiffen the upper cdgc of the heel of the ahoc whcn in superior position, and provide a smooth and rigid surface for guiding the heel of the foot into the Shoe.
In accordance with the patcnt statulcs, I have described the principle of opcration of my invention, together with tho conotructioi'i which I now consider to reircaent the best embodiment thereof, but I csirc to have it understood that the constructioi'i shown is only illustrative and that thc invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than thos above set. forth, within the scope of the following claims.
Having dcscribcd my invention, what I claim new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class set forth, comprising in combination with a low-cut shoe, having the back of its counter portion formed by a plurality of plies of material, a slide frcclv disposed bctwcen said plies and having a pull arm cxtcnding above the upper edge ofsaid counter portion and a lateral wing on its lower portion forming a stiffening means between the plies for the upper edge 11!! of the shoc when the slide is in superior po- .sition. t
2. A device of the class set forth, com rising, in combination with the, back 0 the counter portion of a low-cut shoe, a slide embedded in and having an arm extending above said back and a pair of lateral wings on its lower portion adapted when in superior position to expand said back and remforce its upper edge.
3. A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination with a shoe having the back of its counter portion provided with a plurality of plies of material, a slide between said lies having a pair of curved wings, and a pull arm extending from said Wings and above said plies, for the purposes specified.
4. A device of the class set forth, compris- 'ing, in combination with a low-cut shoe having the back of its counter portion formed by a quarter, a stiffening counter, a counter lining, and a seam at the upper edge of said quarter and having an opening, a slide between said uarter and counter having a pull arm extending through said opening bv which the slide can be raised and lowered, for the purposes specified. s
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing WltHBSSOS.
