Specification of Letters Patent.
Application flied March a1, mos. Serial 110.4,418.
1'0 au. wnmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, MEYER L. RoBnrNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York borough of Manhattan, 1n the county of New York and State of New York, have made 'and invented certain new which the fiollowi is a specification.
M NN/Plifififi re ates to an improvement rockets, brooches, and 1n fact, to
arr/i" of jewelry formed with a receptacle having a hinged lid or cover therefor, the object of the invention bein to provide a hinge for said cover which sha l neat in appearance. (in fact, practically invisible), which shallbe strong and durable, and which shall be cmnparatively simple and in ex nsive to construct and assemble.
, ith these and other ends in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
While the invention is applicable to many articles of jewelry, for the sakeqofillustralied, to a ring,
- Figures 1 and 2 showing t e lid., or cover,
- ao the the sectional pintle and the ring detached or separated. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing arts assembled, but prior to the completion-of the hinge. view taken throu h the hinge on the line of Fig. 5. ig. 5 is a sectional view taken onit'he line 5--5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the finished article.
Referring to the drawings, A .re resents a conunon t e of ring provlded wit the well or reoeptac e B surrounded b the outwardly extending flange C, over which latter snaps or fits the cover or lid D.
As heretofore constructed, hin es for connecting-the lidor cover to the ody of the article, have been made up of two or three loops-or sleeves secured res ctivel' to the lid or cover and, to the artic e to w ich the gut er is attached, a pintle consisting of a bar or wire extending through the several 1 sleeves formed on or secured to the several In those instances where the lid or cover is small or contracted in dimensions, the sleeves or loops must made correspondingly small, necessitating fine and delicate work, and at, best roviding, a hinge which is necessarily weal? and in many instances unable to withstand the strain im' p ses}: are} i and useful Improvements in Hinges, of
Fi 4 is a sectional i It wi 1 be understodd from the foregoing li n loop or sleeve E, made integralwith the lid or cover, or if desired, soldered or otherwise Patented Nov. 3, 1,908.
In my improved hinge, I employ but one Secured thereto, and as but this one sleeve. or 100 is necessary to the proper 'construction 0 g the hinge, it may be made comparatively long, thereby providing a safe and strong bearing, the length of the sleeve be- 1 ipg nearly equal to the width of the lid or 65,
cover. Into the opposite ends of this sleeve 1:) fit the ends of a sectional pintle F, each section having its inner end reduced in diameter, forming the shoulders H, these "shoulders abutting against the ends of the sleeve when the arts are assembled, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, and as the outer surfaces of the larger ends of the sections F lie ,fiush' with the outer surfaces of the sleeve E, the assembled parts in the finished article have the appearance of being made in ODELPIGCB. In constructing the hinge, it has been my practice to make the sections F of such ien y handled by t e workmen, the outer ends projecting somewhat beyond the lid D, as illustrated in Fig. 3, these ends being subsequently cut off as hereinafter described.
ength that they mayl be easily and conven- 30 In the body of the ring, and in proximity to the receptacle B, is cut or otherwise formed the groove or recess I,'curved to conform to the curvature of the sleeve E and sectional pintle F, and in size to nicely contain the same. i
In assembling and securing the parts together, the reduced ends of the lntle sections F are inserted in the o posits ends of the sleeve E until the shpulgers H formed on the sections, abut a' ainst the ends of said sleeve. The lid D is t on snapped over the flange C, the said sleeve and intle nicely fitting within the recess I and com letel fillin the same, as illustrated in i i The ar or ends of the pintle sections are then so dared into the. groove or recess E, in order to permanently and-securely hold, the same in place. The extending or p150 jeoting endsof these sections are then. off to their proper-lewinzgrdento'ccn form and harmonize with theappearance of of the article i i that by means of this construction, the
may be turned or swun on the-reduced ends of the pintle sections, t e hinge, itself being safe, strong and durable, capable bf with standing the strain that is usually im osed upon the same, and practically invisib e, as the sleeve D and pintle sections completely fill the groove or recess I, and have the appearance of being made integral with the ring or body of the article to which the hinge is applied.
'l-leving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a lid provided with a sleeve, of a body, and a sectional pintle, the adjacent ends of which are fitted in the opposite ends of said sleeve and havin their outer ends secured to said body, substantially as described.
2. The combination with lid rovided with asleeve, of :1 body provider with a groove into which said sleeve fits, and a sectional pintle, the adjacent ends of which are fitted in the opposite ends of said sleeve and their outer ends secured in said groove, sub stantially as described.
3. The combination with a lid provided tions of said pintle being reduccd in diam- 1' eter and fitted in the opposite ends of said sleeve, the larger outer ends of said pintle being secured in the groove in said body, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, borough of Man-- hattun, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 27th day of March, A. D, 1998..
