LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER F. AUGEN- BRAUN, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be-a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in locks, the object being to provide improved means for attaching rim locks to doors, whereby all the securing screws are concealed.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings7 Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a section of a door showing my improved lock attaching means, the spider and attaching screws being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a View on the line x-x of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view on the line y--g/ of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a view in plan and Fig. 6 a view in side elevation of the spider.
1 represents a door provided with a slot 2, Oblong in shape with rounded ends, adapted to receive the lock attachments.
3 is a spider comprising a face plate 4 and a flange 5 the latter being of a depth not greater than the thickness of the door, so as to permit the lock 6a to rest solidly against the inner face of the door. The face plate 4 is provided with projecting corners 6, rounded as shown, and provided with holes for the passage of four screws 7, the latter passing through holes in the door and engaging internally threaded bosses 8 in the lock case, thus securing the lock against the inner face of the door, and the face plate 4 to the outer face thereof. The flange 5 of the face plate is continuous as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and is provided midway its length with enlargements (shown in Fig. 4) having holes for the passage of screws 8a. The screw holes are arranged at inclinations as shown, so as to enable the heads thereof to be readil engaged by a screw driver inserted throng the opening in the face plate 4. The face plate is also provided intermediate the holes for the screws 7 and the flange 5, with threaded holes with which the screws 10 engage and lock the escutcheon plate 11 to the front of the door thus completely concealing the spider 3 and the heads of screws 7, which as before explained pass through the face plate of the spider and through the door and old the lock 6 in place. The escutcheon plate 1 1 is provided with cylindrical openings 12 for the passage of the key cylinders 13, and with an opening intermediate the openings 12 for the passage of the knob spindle 13. One knob 14 is carried by the lock casing 6 and the other by the escutcheon plate 11, and are connected by the spindle 13 as shown in Fig. 2.
The key cylinder locks 13a are cylindrical as shown, and are provided with screw threaded inner ends which engage threaded openings in the inner 'face of lock 6, hence it will be seen that when passed through the escutcheon late and spider to engage the lock 6, they a so assist in securing the parts together and maintaining them in their )roper relative positions. Before the key cylinders 13a are placed in position, the roses 14a are placed in position thereon, and when the cylinders 13a are screwed home, the roses which are then held against the escutcheon plate 11 by the flange 15 on the outer ends of the cylinder, cover and conceal the heads of the screws 10, which latter as before explained connect the escutcheon plate to the spider. After the cylinders have been properly placed, they are locked against withdrawal by the screws 16 the ends of which engage the screw threaded ends of the cylinders 13a and prevent them from being rotated or unscrewed. The cylinder' locks are connected in the usual manner with the bolt operating' mechanism, and are used to open the door from the outside, when the outer knob is deadlocked. By securing the parts of the lock attachments as described all the securing screws are concealed and can only be reached by first loosening up on the screws 16 which lock the key cylinders 13u in place, which screws are on the inside of the door, and then withdrawing the cylinders. The removal of the cylinders exposes the screws 10, and the removal of the escutcheon plate exposes the screws 7. Again the employment of a spider separating and supporting the lock and escutcheon plate, permits of the employment of the improvement not only on solid doors of wood or metal, but also on illed doors, Where the interior is composed of a material too soit to support the lock.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction 'herein shown and described, but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. The combination with a door, of a frame or spider secured to one face of the door, a lock bearing against the other face of the door, screws connecting the spider and the lock, an escutcheon plate covering the spider and secured thereto, and means held in place by the lock cylinders for covering and concealing the devices which secure the escutcheon plate to the spider.
2. The combination with a door, of a frame or spider secured to one face thereof, a lock resting against the other face of the door, screws connecting the spider and lock, an escutcheon plate covering` the spider and secured thereto by screws, lock cylinders passing through the escutcheon and spider and into the lock, and roses carried by the cylinders and concealing the screws securing the escutcheon plate to the spider.
3. The combination of a spider, a lock, screws passing through the spider and engaging the lock, an escutcheon plate covering the spider and concealing said screws, one or more other screws securing the escutcheon plate to the spider, one or more lock cylinders passing through the escutcheon plate and spider and engaging the lock, and roses carried by the cylinders and concealing the screws which secure the escutcheon plate to the spider.
4. The combination of a face plate having a series of openin s through same, and a continuous outwarcy projecting rectangular ange, the latter having one or more screw holes arranged at an inclination, a lock, screws passing through the plate and engaging the lock, an escutcheon plate, covering saidv 'lirst mentioned plate and secured thereto by screws, lock cylinders passing through the two plates and screwed to the lock, and roses carried by said cylinders and covering and concealing the screws connecting the two plates.
In testimony whereof, l have signed this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
