Description

s. T. STEWART.- SIGNALIN G SYSTEM PQR RAILBGAD TRAINS.
y APPLIFOATION FILED JAN. 31,1908* Patented oct. 27, 1908.
INVENTOR l IIIIHI'HHIIIU mo EY UNITED To all whom 'it mag/concern.' I.-
sHELLMAN fr; STEWART; or NEWARK;rravrfiaasnr-y mangiamo .sirs'rnu Fon nmoalnrnmsyg# Be itknown that I, SnELLMAN 'TSSTEWARL a citizen of the United States, resdiiigat Newi 'road-Trains, andfI lowing 'to be a full,clear, of the invention, such ark, in the county of Essex v.and State of New A, Jersey, have'invented certain new and useful "f b Improvements in Signaling Systems for Railo hereby declare the rfolas Willkenable others skilled inthe art to which it a pertains 1to make and use the samej-reference the accompanlying drawings, andftoffigures of referencemar ed thereon, 'which formfaparft g of this specification.
This invention relates to a systemof the"- -classj that emp loys an electrical circuitto show, when it 1s unbroken, that all the gates or doors of a railroad train are shut, since the lgates make and break the circuitwhen' the are closed and o ened. The closed circult operates an audib e or visual signal and indicates to the"engineer/or motorman that all;
(fates are shut, Without any manual manipulati'on of signals by the guards ortrainmen.
rEllis-system further 'embraces a secondcircuit that is made and broken by the motorman or engineer, and which acts to' unlock -v tram 1s at a the latches that hold shut the gates" that' make the first circuit. This system' insures all theatesbeing held shut until the ftiill stop and the motorman rcleases the latches of the gates.` The'bolts of -`is installed to complete; the 'circuit passing throu h the gates, `Where it is ,necessary to,y This circuiti passes through the gates land. returnsto the motor car or engine by means of a return the latches can be usedlto makes. connection with the gates to complete the i'rstcircuit.
The invention is illustratedin the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is afdiagrammatic view vof the.
applied to a train, and Fig.v 2 1s a system as dia f t e preferred forniff latch vfor thetrain gates.
' I illustrate, in broken outline, the Acars 10, .Whch are supplied With-the usual gates `11 which are closed by theguards or traininen when the passengers are all aboardY The' gates l1 ac t to conduct electricalcurrent, 'and when shut complete a circuit which' passes through the Wires 12in each car, these wires connectingQthe` gatesof the car,A and a detachable'connection 13, of anyusual style,
