BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application filed April 20, 1907. Serial N 0. 369,365.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. LINK, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Box- Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box lid holder, primarily designed for use in connection with cigar boxes for supporting the lids or covers thereof in an open position at a desired. angle, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive and convenient device of this character which may be bent to hold the lid at any convenient angle, readily and easily applied in position and removed, and en'lployed for holding a price card in position for observation.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a cigar box showing the application of the invention thereto. F 1g. 2 is a bottom plan view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is made.
Referring to the drawing, the holder comprises a body portion 1, comprising an elongated strip of bendable sheet metal. The lower or forward end of this strip is designed to bear upon the upper edge of one of the side pieces of the body A of the cigar box, as indicated at 2, and is forked or provided with downwardly projecting parallel flanges 8 to engage the same, said flanges, when in operative position, lying on opposite sides of the end wall and preventing tilting of the holder in either direction longitudinally of the body of the box. The flanges 3 are bent at right angles to the strip and are of oblong rectangular or other pre ferred form, and are provided with pointed pins or spurs 4 to engage the box, thus preventing the holder from shifting forwardly or rearwardly while in operation.
The upper end of the strip is forked or provided with inwardly extending lateral flanges 5 to engage one of the side edges of the lid or cover B of the box. These flanges lie at right angles to the flanges 3, such arrangement being secured by imparting to 1 the upper end of the stem a quarter twist, as at G. The flanges 5 extend over the normally upper and lower surfaces of the lid B and are provided with spurs or penetrating points 7 to prevent it from shifting thereon, whereby the lid will be firmly and securely supported in position at the desired angle. The upper flange 5 and the spurs 7 carried thereby may be utilized for securing a price card 8, or the like, upon the upper surface of the lid in position for convenient observation to indicate the character and price of the goods.
The holder is made from the form of blank shown in Fig. i, which preferably consists of a piece of sheet metal stamped into form by the action of a die, the wings forming the flanges 3 and 5 being bent into parallel relation along the dotted lines. The pins or spurs 4L and 7 may consist of tacks inserted in openings in the arm or be stamped up as integral projections.
In the use of the device as shown in Fig. 1, it will be understood that the lid B will be held open at the desired angle, and that, owing to the bendable nature of the strip 1, the latter may be so bent or shaped as to hold the lid at any convenient angle, which operation may also be secured by sliding the forked portion 3 on the end wall of'the box. By the provision of the twisted portion 6, the upper end of the strip which supports the lid is reinforced and strengthened, thus adapting it to effectually withstand the strain.
Having thus described is claimed as new, is
1. A box lid holder comprising a single strip of flexible material, said strip being provided at one end with laterally projecting flanges, integral with the side edges thereof, and also provided at its opposite end with depending flanges integral with the side edges thereof and projecting beyond said end, the latter named flanges extending lengthwise longitudinally of the strip, said strip being quarter twisted adjacent to the first named flanges to project the end portions thereof into different planes at right angles to each other.
2. A sheet metal blank for the production of a box lid holder made of a single piece of material comprising an elongated strip prothe invention, what vided at one end With extensions from the opposite sides thereof arranged in alinenient With each other and at right angles to the strip, and at its opposite end with flanges projecting longitudinally in parallel relation beyond the said end and integral with the side edges thereof at their rear ends.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
