Description

ntwt f @dm 'u J. GoDF'R'EY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
" neem Patent No. 90,165, dan@ May 18,1869'. 4
IMPRovnn mon* LAST.
The Schedule reerrledrto in these Letters Patent and making pari; of the sanie.
To all whom tt ma/y concern: l
.Be it known that I, J. GODFREY, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement inlron Lasts; and I do hereby deiv clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description' thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to. the accompan'yng4 drawing, forming. part of this specification.
The figure is a side View of my improved last, part being broken away, to show the construction.
My invention has for its objectrto furnishan improved iron last, which shall` be so constructed that the same last may be used for different-sized boots and shoes, avoiding the necessity of having a set of lasts;
and
It consists in connecting the foot to the standard with an adjustable joint, vso than the' said foot may be set at .different angles to said standard, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the standard of the last, which is set in a socket formed in a bench, post, or other suitable support.
Upon the upper end of the standardfA is formed a tenon, which enters a slot in the foot B, where it is secured by two pins, O and D.
The pin Gis permanently secured in place by riveting its ends, so as to pivot the Vfoot B tothe standard A.
The forward pin D is detachable, and is placed in one orithe other of the holes, formed for its reception, according as itis desired to set the foot B at a greater or less angle with the standard A.
If desired, the adjustment of the foot B, upon the pivoting-pin or bolt C, may be obtained by means of a spring-catch, bolt,.or toothed rack, the particular manner in which the adjustment is obtained being immaterial, so long as the foot B may be securely held at any desired angle with the standard A, Without'auy other support.
By this construction, when the lastistoh'e used with a small boot or shoe, it may be adjusted nearly in a horizontal position. When it is to be used with a larger boot or shoe, it is set at a less or greater in y ciination, according to the size of the boot or shoe.
By setting the foot B at a greater angle, it may be pushed forward, so as to reach to the toe of said boot or shoe, however large it may be, thus enabling the same last to be used for differeu'sized shoes with equal facility, entirely obviating the necessity of 'having lasts of diifereut sizes for ifferent sizes of boots and shoes.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire tu secure by Letters Patent, is 7' Connecting the foot. B to the standard A, by an adjustable joint-,without other support, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 22d day of March, 1869.
Y J. GODFREY.
