TYP RITER.
Specification of Iletters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Application filed January 9, 1908. Serial no. 410,028.
To' all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, HERMANN GRossLER, a sub'ect of the Emperor of Germany, residing at evalerstrasse 2, Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ty e-Writers; and Ido hereby declare the fo owing to be a full, clear, and
- exact description ofthe invention, such as writing is eflected is considerably reduced in the operator.
will enable others skilled in the art to which it it pertains to make and use the same.
his invention for improvements in keyoperating mechanism for type writers and similar machines has for its object to enable the Writing to be effected more easilyand rapidly thanhitherto and consists in an electrical actuating device comprising an electromagnet provided with a coreoperatively connected with each key lever, a normally open energizin circuit, and means for closing the circuit a apted'to be placed on the finger of Devices foro crating the keys of typewriters are alrea y known, in which an electric current is employed. With these devices the ty istmakes use of a contact pin,
which is app ied to the key or the i'iypist actuatesdiflerent contact buttons. n the case of the former method the speed at'which the comparison with that done with machines having the ordinary key-operating mechanism. The latter method involves a greater expenditure of work, as the contact buttons must be moved in order to make contact. All these disadvantages areavoided with the present invention, the ke s carrying contact pieces, which are bridge over by means of metal caps or thimbles placed on the fingers of the typist. key is sufiicient for closing the circuit.
The invention is illustrated in the accomp n drawing.
Thie iey b is touched by a metal piece h without which there is no flow of current.
This metal iece h is formed similarly to a thimble an when the key b is touched V bridges over. the two contact plates 0 and a.
One of the contacts. for example 0 is conductively connected with the key lever. a, while the other contactc is connected with the wirei that "leads to an electromagnet e. If
The slightest contact with the both contacts 0 and c be touched with the thimble h the ma net e is excited. The current flows from t e battery g through the Wire 7c to the key lever a, and thence to the contact piece 0 of the key. From the contact piece 0 the current flows through the thimble to the contact piece a and through the wire 7', to. the magnet e. After leaving the magnet c the current returns to the battery through the wire I. When the magnet is energized the core or armature d carried'by the key lever is attracted, and in this way the key lever is fully depressed, whereby the type corresponding to the key lever a, is impressed on the paper that is to be written on.
What I claim and desire to secureby Letters Patentisz- 1. In .combination with a typewriting machine a pivoted lever, a key thereon, a pair of contacts thereon, an electric line connecting said contacts, an electro magnet, and a source of current connected in series in said line and a plunger for said electro magnet, said'plunger being connected with said lever.
-2. In combination with a typewriting machine, a pivoted lever, a key thereon, a pair of contacts thereon, an electric line connecting said contacts, an electro magnet, and a 'source of currentconnected in series in said line and a plunger for said electro magnet, said plunger being connected with said lever, said contacts being adapted to be connected by a conducting means carried by the finger of the operator of the machine.
3. In combination with a key of an electrical typewritin machine, a pair of contacts on said key, a p unger depending from said key, an electro magnet adapted to attract said plunger, a source of electricalcurrent and a line connecting said contacts, said source of current and said electro magnet being connected inseries between said contacts in said line.
51. In a typewriting machine, a key, an electric circuit having both its terminals on said key, a key-operating magnet in said circuit, and means carried by the finger of the o erator to connect said terminals-and comp ete said circuit, thereby energizing said magnet.
1 5. In a typewriting machine, an electric In testimony whereof I have afiixcd my slgnature 1n presence of two wltnesses.
