Description

UNITED s'rAtr s A ENT oEEroE.
DAVID R. STEELE, oEBALTr o E, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY D. HARVEY, 0 BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
; FURNACE-)TILTING MECHANISM.
. v Specification; of Letters Patent. Original application filed October 12, 1905,'Seria1 No. 282,452. Divided Patented Sept. 29, 1908,
and. this app1ication filed. March 1., 1906.
Serial No. 303,725. I
To all whom it may concemi I r J Be it known that 1, DA ID R. STEELE,'3, citizen of the United States, residing at timore, intheState of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements furnace structures, and particularly to smelting furnaces, which are adapted for smelting or reducing ores and then pouring them in a molten condition. I V
It'is the object of the invention among other things, to provide-a furnace with a tilting or tipping body portion andmechanism for-tipping the same. 7
Wit the invention comprises certain novel oonstructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described andclaimed. i r I v In the accompanying.drawing,-Figure l is a side elevation of a smelting furnace the cover or top thereof being in position and.
provided with my improved lifting means.
ig. 2 is a side elevation of the gearing used I in controlling the movement of the furnace,
the long wheel for operating the same being also shown. I i g H In the accompanying drawing 1 indicates a furnace which is generallyv pivotally mounted on suitable supports as'2, the 'fur nace being preferably of the open top type adapted for thepouring 0f metalsafter they have been 'smelted within the furnace. It is necessary in carrying on some operations to close or partially close the top of the furnace in order to retain and properly ap ly the heat employed to the contents of the fllrnace. For this purpose a cover or top of material capable of withstanding I a considerableda' gree of heat without melting or without detriment is employed and so mounted that it may be used Without interfering with the tipping of the furnace. I referablycon+ struct such a cover or top of and secure the same for liftingpurposes by. means of a band or ring 4, which is drawn tightly around the periphery of said fire Ball-7 these and further objects in view,
and beyond t to carry a hand Wheel or turning device made re brick as; at 3,
the
brick, the said band usually fitting in an annular groove in the edge of-the cover.
In the o eration of the device the cover may be lif tedfrom its closed position as shown in Fig. 1 by grasping the end of the lever 17 and pulling it downwardly to an approximately horizontal position.- This will straighten the toggle connection formed by the arm 19 and the link 20 forcing the sleeve 6 upwardly and thus lifting the cover well out of engagement with, and above the upper edge of the-furnace 1. The cover thus eing moved entirely out of the way ofthe furnace. 1 the said furnace may be readily tipped upon its sup orts for pouring molten metal or emptying t e contents thereof.
In connection with the cover, means is employed for holding the furnace proper in an upright position or for tilting it to any angle necessary for the pouring of molten metals and such. mechanism. forms an important feature of the invention. The body portion of the furnace is preferably constructed with a cylindrical closure as indicated at 1 having trunnions projecting upon the opposite sides thereof to engage the bearings in the standards or supports 2. Secured to one of said trunnions is a gear 24 which meshes with a similar car 25 rigidly secured to the outer end of a s ort shaft 26. The inner end of said short shaft 26 carries a gear 27 which in turn meshes with the comparatively small pinions28. The pinion 28 is rigidly secured to the inner end of the shaft 29 journaled in one of thestandards 2. The outer end of the shaft 29 e gearing a suflicient distance up of a hub 30 having radiating handle arms 31. The said handle arms are screwed into sockets formed in the hub 30 and fastened by means of binding nuts 32 so as not to turn or twist out of place. The outer ends of said arms 31' are bent to one side to form hand holds 33. The levera e thus obtained through the arms 31 and the train of gears described is such that the furnace can be 'easily turned upon its trunnions and held in any of its adjusted positions. The upper part of thejfurnace is rovided with a ourmg s out as at 34 whi e urnace has a slag opening 35 through the lower portion of lprojects beyond the standard which the slag may be removed from the furnace from time to time. The furnace is also provided with an opening in its wall as at 36 opposite which a burner 37 is mounted, the said burner being capable of injecting oil under air or steam pressure into the furnace, where it is burned for heating the same.
When the contents of the furnace have been subjected to heat a suflicient length of time and it is desired to pour the contents into a mold or other receptacle the cover 3 is elevated by pulling upon the lever 17, and is then turned toone side after which the furnace is tipped by means of the hand Wheel and the gearing until the material is run into a dipper for pouring. The furnace is capable of being held by the gearing with a minimum of-exertion in any of its adjusted positions, and as above stated, the cover also requires an exceedingly small expenditure of force or strength to accomplish its lifting, and turning to one side.
This is adivisional application of my application for furnaces,- filed October 12, 1905, Serial No. 282,452, and 1s made a separate application.
Havin now described in inven t1on What I I clalm as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s The combination of a furnace body, trunnions thereon, standards supporting said trunnions, a train of gearing connected with one of the trunnions, the wheels of said gearing mounted on the trunnion last mentioned and on an adjoining standard, means for DAVID lt. STEELE.
