Be it known that I, JOHN EBLnre, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being .had to the accompanyingdraw'ng, fforming part of this specifica- Figure 1 represents -a sectional View of ,the mechanisrnof this lock,- when the same is open.

This invention relates to a lock, the locking-device of which is acted on by' a key, with a sectional stem, composed of two parts, which are hinged together, and operated by mere pressure on the ring, or handle of the key.
When the keyis inserted in its socket, and its ring is compressed, the bits of said key are made to project through holes in the side ofthe socket, and if the bolt is locked, said bits act on projections of the tumbler or tumblers, so as to release the bolt, and allowing the same to `follow the action of a-spring, which forces it back into the case.
The same spring which actson the bolt also acts on the latch, and thebolt is/provided with Vone or more shoulders to act against a corresponding number of projections on the latch, in such a manner that by locking the bolt, the latch is also locked, but when the bolt is unlocked, the latch can be operated in the usual a vA represents the case of my lock, which is made of cast iron, or any other suitable material, in thev usual In this case move the bolt B and the latch O.

The key K is represented in iig. `3.
It is composed of two parts, which are united by a hinge-joint, '1, andA curved at one end, to formj the ring, or handle m, while the straight ends of said two parts form the shank of the key.
A spring, n, which is enclosed in one part of the handle, and acts on the other part, presses the two partsof the shank together, and by compressing the ring against the action of' the spring n, the two parts of the shank open like shears.
One portion of the shank is somewhat wider than the other portion, so that a cross-section of said shank is T-shaped, to correspond to the hole in the socket F.
In the interior of this hole is a projection, o, against which the shoulders p, o f the shank of the key, catch up, so that said key, on being inserted into the keyhole, will be retained in the required position.
If the key is brought in thisposition, and the handie mis oompressed, the pins, or bits q, which project from the narrow part of the shank, catch inthe holes la of the socket, and bear against the pins'i of the tumblers, `provided the bolt is locked, and by these means the tumblers are tilted on their fulcra, and the bolt is released, so that itis free to follow the action of its spring, and to fly back into the case.
It is obvious, that by changing the length of the bits'q, and of the corresponding pins t', and by increasi and said latch is also locked, and it cannot be thrown back until the `bolt is unlocked. r
The latch is operated by a-nut, L, and by knobs or handles, in the ordinary manner.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The key K, made in two parts, and provided with bits q, `said parts being hinged together, and made to open by pressing the handle m, substantially as and forv the purpose described. i
2. The tumblers G, hinged to a stud, d, and provided with pins t, and hooked tails e, .in combination with'ethe socket F, key. K, and bolt B,`substantially as and for the purpose described;
3. The spring E, acting simultaneously on the bolt and on the latch, as shown and described. l
