Description

PATENTED SEPT. 1, 1908.

WRENGH- APPLICATION FILED JAN. 10, 1908.

FRANK D. BODEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed January 10, 1908. Serial No. 410,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. BODEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Germantown, a suburb of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to detachable jaws for the same, the object being to provide a jaw which can be readily attached to the jaw of the ordinary monkey wrench now in use, whereby the wrench can be converted into a pipe wrench.
Another object of my invention is to pivotally mount the detachable jaw on the jaw of the monkey wrench, whereby it can be moved thereon in different positions and locked.
Another object of my invention is to provide the detachable jaws with reversible wedge shaped jaw faces.
Another object of my invention is to provide a detachable jaw which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one which can be easily and quickly attached or removed from the jaw, and one which is very effective in use.
These objects are obtained by the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of an ordinary monkey wrench showing my improved detachable jaws arranged on the jaws of the same. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section through the fixed jaw of the wrench and the detachable jaw. Fig. 3, is a transverse section through the movable jaw and detachable jaw. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of a modified form of jaw face detached.
In the drawings A, indicates a monkey wrench, provided with an ordinary shank having a fixed jaw B, and a movable jaw C, provided with transverse bores, adjacent their outer ends. Arranged on the fixed jaw is one of my improved jaws D, which comprises a grooved block, adapted to fit over the jaw B, and be pivotally mounted thereon by a pin E, which extends through openings formed in the walls of the block, and through the transverse bore formed in the jaw, so as to allow the jaw to move in respect to the fixed jaw.
The pin E, is provided with a threaded end which is adapted to be screwed into the threaded opening of the block, the outer end being provided with a slot to receive I a screw driver, and it will be readily seen that this pin can be readily inserted or detached, and when secured in place, the jaw will be securely held on the fixed jaw, and yet be capable of swinging thereon.
A threaded bore is formed in one side of the jaw face in which is mounted a thumb screw F, adapted to engage the side of the fixed jaw and lock the jaw in its adjusted po sition. A wedge shaped serrated jaw face I, is secured on the jaw D, by screws working in threaded bores formed in the jaw, so arranged that the jaw face can be readily reversed so as to bring the thicker end towards the end of the j aw when desired. It will be seen that when placed on the pipe, it will grasp the same and prevent it from turning.
A similar jaw G, is arranged over the movable jaw O, of the wrench, and is secured thereon by a pivot pin G, and locked in its adjusted position by thumb screws H. This jaw is also provided with a reversible jaw face I, secured thereon in a similar manner, and it will be seen that the jaw faces can be arranged on the detachable jaws as shown in Fig. 1, or reversed when desired. A
In Fig. 4, I show a modified f0rm.of jaw face having a conical face so as to fit a pipe.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very novel jaw which can be readily attached to any of the well known monkey wrenches or spanners now in use, by simply boring a transverse opening through the jaws and placing the jaws over the same and inserting the pivot 1n. p Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a wrench, of detachable jaws pivotally mounted on the jaws of the wrench, and means for locking said detachable aws in their adjusted positions.
2. The combination with a monkey wrench, of detachable jaws arranged over the jaws of the wrench, said jaws being pivotally connected to the jaws of the wrench, and thumb screws for locking said detachable jaws to the jaws of the wrench in their adjusted positions.
3. The combination with a monkey wrench, provided with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw having transverse bores extending therethrough, of detachable jaws arranged over said jaws, pivot .pins extending through said detachable jaws and bores of the aws, reversible jaw faces secured on the detachable jaws, and thumb screws working in threaded bores formed in the detachable jaws adapted to engage the jaws of the wrench, for the pur pose described.
4. The combination with a monkey wrench, provided with the ordinary fixed and movable jaws, having transverse bores extending therethrough, of detachable jaws comprising grooved blocks arranged over said jaws, pivot pins extending through the walls of said block,
and through the bores of the jaws, wedge shaped serrated j aw faces, detachably mounted on said detachable jaws, and thumb screws working in threaded bores formed in the walls of the blocks, adapted to engage the sides of the jaws for locking said detachable jaws in their adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK D. BODEY.
