To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Holmes. L. KINGsLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The invention consists in what is herein shown, described and claimed; its object being to provide simple, economical, light, strong and durable neck-yokes having advantageous pole-connections therewith.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a plan view of my improved neckyoke partly broken away, Fig. 2, a partly transverse section view of the neck-yoke in connection with a fragment of a draft-pole that is partly broken and in section, Figs. 3 and 4: other partly transverse section views of the yoke, Fig. 5, a transverse section view of the pole fragment on the plane indicated by line 55 in Fig. 2, Fig. 6, a plan View of said pole fragment inverted, and Fig. 7, a perspective view of one section of the neck-yoke center connection on a larger scale than the other illustrations.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a neck-yoke bar of wood or other suitable material preferably tapered from at or near the center in opposite directions, its ends being fitted in ferrules B each provided with a rearwardly extending angular yoke l) in which a sleeve 0 is arranged on a pin d that engages apertures in ends of said yoke and is upset at its ends against the same, the yokes, sleeves and pins combining to form breaststrap loops.

Embracing the bar A, central of same, is a clip comprising angular matching sections 0 having rear flanges e and front flanges f that are bolted or riveted together. It is preferable, as herein shown, to insert packing between the rear flanges of the clip-sections to provide for the take up in case of shrinkage of the bar A when made of wood. The opposing faces of the front flanges of the clip-sections are recessed to receive eye-ends g of trussrods D and the other screw-threaded ends of these rods are extended through front swells h of the ferrules aforesaid. Nuts i are run on the screw-threaded ends of the trussrods against the adjacent ferrules, as herein shown. Indentations are preferably provided in the ends of the neck-yoke bar for the engagement of the truss-rods opposite the swells of the ferrules.

The eye-ends of the truss-rods are engaged by bolts or rivets that extend through the front flanges of the clip-sections aforesaid, and said ends of said rods being caught in the recesses aforesaid, there is no strain at any time upon said fastening devices. The front flanges f of the clip-sections are also recessed, as shown at is, to provide for the reception of the rear link m of a short chain, and said link being clamped in place, there is no strain of the chain at any time upon the front bolt or rivet n that extends through ap ertures in the central portions p of said flanges of said clip-sections, which central portions of these clip-sections engage and fill the aforesaid link of the chain. It may not be necessary to at all times employ the bolt or rivet n and while a preferable specific construction and arrangement of parts has been shown and described for the formation of a truss in connection with a neck-yoke bar, my invention is generic to any neck-yoke that embodies a truss. The aforesaid chain is for connection with a hook E at or near the forward end of a draft-pole. The hook is herein shown provided with a shank 0 that extends through the ferruled end of the pole F and is upset upon the same, but in practice said hook may be attached to the pole in various Ways. The chain is passed through a forward eye 1" integral with the pole-ferrule G, as herein shown, or otherwise secured to said pole as may be most convenient or desirable in practice, and by means of said chain arranged and connected, as above specified, the neck-yoke is put in swivel connection with the aforesaid pole. The peculiar union of the neck-yoke chain with the draft-pole as herein specified is an absolute safety-connection, in that it is impossible in ractice for the neck-yoke to be automatically detached from the pole under any circumstances.

I claim:

1. A neck-yoke bar provided with a center connection consisting of a separable clip embracing the same and having forward matching flanges provided with recesses in their opposing faces, truss-rods having eye-ends engaging said recesses, fastening devices extending through the clip-flanges and trussrod eyes, and means connecting the other ends of said rods with said bar.

2. A neck-yoke provided with a separable center clip embracing the same and having front matching flanges provided with recesses in their opposing faces, and a chain having the rear link thereof clamped between said flanges in the recesses of same, the chain being for connection with a forward hook of a draft-pole.

3. A neck-yoke, a chain in connection with the yoke central of same, and a pole-fitting having a forward eye through. which the chain is passed to engage a hook with which the pole is provided.

4. A neck-yoke, a chain in connection with the yoke central of same, a pole-fitting hav ing a forward eye through which the chain is passed, and a hook having a shank that constitutes a means for securing said fitting in connection with the pole.
