FLUE-OLEANER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed July 26, 1907. Serial No. 385,734.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DEUOHAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented new and useful 1m rovements in Flue-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning the flues of steam boilers and the like; and it has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices, and to provide a device which may be readily adjusted to fit in fiues of different diameters, for the purpose of removing soot and similar roducts of com bustion adhering to the wa s thereof.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is nessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a top plan view of a flue cleaner constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved flue cleaner is com osed of a sheet of metal, preferably steel, 0' suitable shape and dimensions, the same being bent or curved to form a hollow cone 1; the proximate edgesof the sheet being made to overlap as will be clearly seen in Fig. 1, and the open base of the cone being trimmed or out off obliquely so as to present a projecting lip 2 which is preferably disposed diametrically opposite to the overlapping meeting edges which latter are designated 3 4. Near the small end or apex of the cone there are formed upstanding lugs 55, adjacent to the edges of the sheet, and said lugs are apertured for the passage of a connecting bolt 6. The edge of the device, at the large end of the cone or funnel is preferably slightly outturned around the greater portion of the end of the cone or funnel 1; a shoulder 10 being formed adjacent to the projection 9 to form an abutment for said cone or funnel; thus, when the latter is secured by the clamping bolt 6, the conical projection 9 and the shoulder 10 will cooperate to prevent displacement thereof, longitudinally. The baseblock 8 is provided with a screw-threaded socket or recess 11 for the reception' of a handle 12; and said base-block is also provided with a longitudinal screw-threaded aperture 13 for the reception of a bolt 14 which latter extends longitudinally within the hollow cone or funnel 1, said bolt carrying a disk or diaphragm 15 the edge of which abuts interiorly upon the hollow cone or funnel. The bolt 14 is provided with a polygonal head 16 adapted to be engaged by a key or wrench whereby it may be turned; and said bolt has an annular flange or collar 17 bearing against the outer face of the disk or diaphragm 15. The bolt 14 may be, and preferably is provided with an additional flange or collar 18 engaging the inner face of the disk 15, the latter being fitted loosely upon the bolts between said collars.
It will be readily seen that by turning the bolt in one direction, the disk 15 will be forced towards the small end of the hollow cone or funnel, thus spreading or-expanding the latter, to fit within fines of relatively large diameter; by turning the bolt in the opposite direction, the disk 15 will be moved outward, towards the large end of the hollow cone or funnel, which latter may then be collapsed or contracted to fit in flues of rela tively small diameter.
The improved device is extremely simple in construction, and it may be manufactured at a small expense; it has proven in practice to be thoroughly eflicient for the purposes for which it is provided.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
A fine cleaner comprising a handle having a block at one end, said block being provided with a shoulder and a conical projection, a funnel shaped expansible member having overlapping edges and having its smaller end fitted on the conical projection of the block and bearing against said shoulder, means at" the smaller end of said funnel shaped member, connecting its overlapping edges together, a disk in said funnel shaped member, and an operating screw to move said disk in 10 said funnel-shaped member to expand the "in presence of two witnesses.
