CORRUGATING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. .SToUT, a citizen of the United States, and residing in Waltz township, in the county of I'Vabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Corrugating Device, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to means for bending wires'l to form staples or loops and the object of my improvement is to provide a wire bending device with means 'for corrugating or serrating the inner side of the loop or staple at the same time it is beingbent.
My invention consists in a novel loop or staple bending device adapted for corrugating or serrating, and so constructed that it may also be used for cutting the wire for such loops oi staples into proper lengths.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1` is a perspective view of my improved bending and corrugating device. Fig. 2 is a verl tical cross section on a larger scale showing a piece of wire being bent and corrugated. Fig. 3 is a view of the operating lever. F iff. 4 is a cross section of a staple on a large scaI showin the corrugations. Fig. 5 is a side view-ot the bent and corrugated end of a staple.

This stapIe bender and corrugator is espe# cially adapted to form the loops 5 -of the fastening means 6 shown in the drawings of Patent No. 874,453 to W. W. Stout, dated December 24th, 1907, for cement fence posts, and especially to formY the corrugations 10 in such loops. It isto be understood however, that the device may be einployedfor shearing wires and bending and corrugating the same for any other purpose.
In the accompanying drawings the frame of this bending device is shown formed with' a base 1 and side members2 and 3 connected thereto or formed integral therewith as desii-ed.
Mounted on a ,pivot 4 is a lever 7 of any desirable length,whicli maybe provided wit a handle 8 at its outer end. .The inneren'd 9 of the lever is provided with a cutting edge 12 so that when pieces of wire are pushed through the hole 13 in the side 2 they can be sheared of by means of this cutting end of .the lever. The lever is also provided -with atapering portion 14, rounded at its'lower edge, where it is provided with a series of teeth 15. slightly grooved as at 16 in Fig. 2 to vfit the curve of the loop to be formed on the wire.
When lengths of wireare laid across the sides 2 and 3 and the lever is moved down, the part 14 willirst bend the wire as shown in Fig. 2 forming the-loop 5.
If desired the base 1 maybe- A sufficient- `pressure on the outer end of the lever 7 will cause the teeth 15 to form the corrugations 10 as shown in the drawings. It is apparent operations may be carried on simultaneous y. It is desirable that the end 9 and portion 14 of this lever be of hard material', preferablyof tool steel, in order that it shall have good wearing `qualities.
Various changes and modifications may be employed inthe construction of this corrugating device without in any way departing from the spii't and scope of the invention. Having now explained my improvements,
what I claim as my inventionv and desire to' secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. In a corrugating and bending device, the combination of a base, sides projecting upward therefrom, and a lever pivoted'between these sides having teeth formed at the.
lower edge-thereof and adapted to bend and corrugate wires laid across the-sides.
2. A wire bendingA and corrugating device, Y'
comprising a base and upright sides', anda lever pivoted between said sides and having a cutting edge, one of said sides having an aperture through which the wire mayv extend, j f
said lever being also provided with a series of teeth on its lower edge adapted to bend and corrugate wires placed across the sides.
3. A wire corrugating device comprisinga frame, and a lever pivoted in said frame having a downwardly tapering portion providedV with teeth at its lower edge, said'frame hav# ing a groove in which said tapering ,portion of the lever may extend so .as to bend and corrugate wires placed yacross saidgroove.
