NAIL.
Patented Aug. 11,1908.
7 Application filed October 19, 1907. Serial No. 398,249.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. DIE a'a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Wing, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, haveinvented a new and useful Nail, of which the following is a s ecification. This invention relates generaiiy to nails, and particularly to that class employed in securing felt to roofs, or for attaching sheathing paper tobuildings or advertisements to sign boards.
The object of the invention is, in a novel and practical manner, without in any way changing the construction of the nail or ofemploying solder, to combine an ordinary nail, such as awire nail, with a ca in such way that not only will the nail be eld positively against disconnection with the cap, but the latter will operate in an eifective manner to perform the dual function of holding the object to be secured in position, and also of preventing water seeping or passing under the cap to the stem or shank of the nail.
With the above and other objects in view,
he erdinary or barbed I rated generiai reature or as will appear as the nature of the invention The ca or head is constructed from a strip of s eet metal such as tin and comprises a back member 4, a face member 5 and a locking flange 6, the latter forming a continuation of the face member. The bad: member 4 is provided at its center with an orifice 7 through which the shank of the nail rojects, and when the cap is struck up or ormed to shape the metal ofthe back member around the orifice 7 will be dished inward, as shown at 8. This latter feature, however, is not one of practical importance as if the female die be perfectly fiat on its up per surface this depression does not appear. The face member 5 immediately over the head is outward dished as at 9.
In assembling the ca shape shown in Fig. 1, the nail is inserted through the orifice 7, and by a suitable mechanism, the flange 6 is turned under and against the back member 4 and the perimeter of the head is then dished downward, or
- toward thepoint'of the ail, as shown at 10,
thereby providing a marginal edge 11 which will bite into the felt, paper, or the like and thus preclude the entrance of water around the head of the nail, whereby thelatter will be shielded from corrosion.
it will be seen from the foregoing description that althou h the improvements herein defined are simp e in character, they will be thoroughly efficient for the purposes de-' signed, and' will result in the provision of a thoroughiy effective article of hardware.
1 ing thus fully described the invention it is claimed is .e. fastener comprising a cap consisting of a st p of metai foided upon itself and having ieend bent around the other end, and a nail ring head disposed between the members h my own, i have hereto my signature e presence or TVitnesses XnoLLn,
J Swanson.
