1 new and useful Improvements in Sliding- Door Locks, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a sliding door lock, my object being to construct a simple, inexpensive lock which is particularly appli cable for sliding doors, and which look is so bolts carried thereby will at all times enter their respective seats or recesses, regardless of the warping or settling of the doors on which the locks are carried, or the door casings in which the lock and bolt engage.
Heretofore it has generally been the practice to locate locks on the meeting stiles of sliding doors, and where either one of the doors warp or settle to even a slight degree,
said locks are rendered inoperative owing to the fact the locking bolt is out of alinement with the corresponding opening, and by my improved construction, this difficulty and annoyance is overcome.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of sliding doors equipped with locks of my improved construction; Flg. 2 is a perspective view of the sliding plate made use of in my improved lock, and which carries the locking bars; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the center of the look as it appears when in position in the stile of the door; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

Seated in the outer stile of each door 1 is a lock housing 3, and arranged to slide longitudinally therein is a plate 4, in the under side of the rear end of which is formed a notch 5, which receives the bit of a key drawings :1 designates the sliding doors,
I utilized for throwing the plate from one pol sition to another, and which key passes through a suitable key hole 6 formed through i the door stile and housing 3 3 there being an escutcheon 7 located on the outer faces of the stile, immediately around said keyhole.
Fixed on a pin 8, which is rigidly seated in one side of the housing 3, and which passes through a slot 9 formed in the plate 4 is a series of spring actuated tumbler plates 10, the rear ends of which overlie the notch at the rear end of the plate 4, and said tumbler plates being provided with the vertically disposed slots 11', which are adapted to receive 1 a lug 12 formed on the side face of the plate 1 4 when the latter is shifted from one position to another. The form of tumbler plates shown is common in various door locks, and is one of a number of similar devices which can be readily employed to lock the plate 4 in both of its positions.
Formed in the forward end of the plate 4 is a rectangular opening 12, and passing therethrough is a vertically disposed pin or screw 13, on which is pivotally arranged the rear ends of a pair of curved locking bolts 13, one of which operates immediately on top of the other; and formed through said locking bolts are the curved slots 14.
Formed integral with the face plate of the lock housing 3, and projecting outwardly therefrom, is a pair of lugs 15, and passing vertically through the same are screws or pins 16, which pass through the curved slots 14.
Formed in the faces of the posts or studding, immediately adjacent the lock, are the vertically disposed grooves or notches 17, and located on the rear faces thereof are metal plates 18, which latter prevent the outer ends of the locking bolts from cutting into the woodwork when said locking'bolts are moved outwardly into locked positions.
l hen the plate 4 and bolts 13 occupy an unlocked position, the rear ends of said locking bolts are drawn into the housing 3 so that the outer ends thereof are withdrawn from the notches 17, (as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l 4,) and the door on which the'lock is fixed is 1 now free to be opened or closed, as desired. 1 When the doors are closed, with the meet- 1 plat-e 4 so that the locking bolts 13 are moved forward out of the housing 3, during which action the pins 16 passing through the slots 14 act as guides to throw the outer ends of the locking bolts into the notches 17 and against the plates 18. Thus, the doors are very effectually locked, and should either door or the door frame settle or become warped, the outer ends of the locking bolts 13 will still engage in the notches 17 ,owing to the length thereof; and, if an attempt is made to force the doors apart, the outer ends of the locking bolts 13 engage against the metal plates 18, and thus prevent any opening movement.
A lock of my improved construction is simple, strong, and durable, and can be applied to all forms of sliding doors, and. the like.
I claim: I
1. The combination with a sliding door and sliding door pocket, of a key operated lock arranged in the rear one of the stiles of the sliding door and capable of being locked or unlocked from either side of the door, a bolt arranged for o eration in the lock, and means whereby the fdcking bolt is moved outward to engage the wall of the sliding door pocket when the door is locked.
2. The combination with a sliding door and sliding door pocket, of a lock housing arranged in the rear one of the door stiles, a pair of locking bolts arranged for operation in the lock housing, means whereby the locking bolts are projected laterally to bring their outer ends against the walls of the sliding door pocket when the door is locked, and there being recesses formed in the inner walls of the slidin door pocket which receive the outer ends of the locking bolts.
3. The combination with a sliding door and sliding door pocket, of a lock housing carried by the rear one of the door stiles, a pair of locking bolts arranged for operation in the housing, key operated means arranged in the housing for moving the locking bolts transversely relative to the plane occupied by the door and lock, and vertically disposed keepers on the walls of the sliding door pocket which receive the ends of the locking bolts when moved outward.
4. The'combination with a sliding door, of a lock housing arranged in one of the stiles thereof, a plate arranged to slide in the housin a pair of locking bolts mounted on vertical pivots at one end of the plate, and means whereby said locking bolts are guided laterally in horizontal planes when the plate is shifted from one position to another.
5. The combinatlon with a sliding door and sliding door ocket, of a lock housing arranged in one o the stiles thereof, a member arranged to slide in the housing, a pair of locking bolts pivotally arranged on one end of the member, means whereby said locking bolts are guided laterally in horizontal planes when the member is shifted from one position to another,- and there being vertically disposed elongated recesses formed in the inner faces of the sliding door pocket to receive the ends of the locking bolts when the same are moved outward.
6. The combination with a sliding door and sliding door pocket, of a lock housin arranged in the rear one of the stiles of the sliding door, a key operated plate arranged for operation in the lock housing, a pair of locking bolts actuated by the late and which locking bolts move lateral y relative the plane occupied by the door and lock housing, and there being elongated vertically disposed slots formed in the inner faces of the walls of the sliding door pocket, which slots receive the outer ends of the lockin bolts.
7. The combination with a slicing door and sliding door pocket, of a lock housin arranged in the rear one of the stiles of the sliding door, locking bolts arranged to move through one end of the lock housing and adapted to be moved in opposite directions through one end of the lock housing, and the outer ends of which locking bolts are projected laterally beyond the side faces of the sliding door when moved into a locked position, and there being vertically disposed elongated recesses formed in the inner face of the sliding door pocket, which recesses receive the outer ends of the locking bolts when the same are moved outward.
8. The combination with a sliding door and its pocket, of a housing mounted in the rear stile of said door, a locking bolt carried by said housing, its outer end adapted to be projected laterally beyond the face of said sliding door when locked, there being a recess formed in the inner wall of the sliding door pocket for receiving the front end of the bolt when the door is locked, and means for operating said locking bolt.
9. A look for sliding doors, comprising a housing, a member arrangedfor operation therein, and a air of locking bolts operating through the orward portion of the lock housing and actuated by the movable member in the lock housing, and the outer ends of which locking bolts are projected laterally beyond the side faces of the sliding door to engage the walls of the sliding door pocket when shifted into locked positions.
10. A look for sliding doors, comprising a housing, a locking bolt, the outer end of which is capable of being projected laterally beyond the side face of the sliding door in which the lock is seated to engage the walls of the sliding door pocket to lock said door, and means arranged in the housing for actu ating the locking bolt.
11.
