Description
PATENT elution.
AXTX FISI'XREICII, OF BAILEY, NBRASKA.
SPIKE.
To all trimm, it ymay concern.:
Be it known that I, ANTON lissxnnicn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bailey, in the county of Cherr) and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spikes; and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in spikes for use in securing track rails upon railway cross-ties and for other purposes.
T heobject of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fastening of this character, which may be readil) driven into a wooden tie, and which cannot possibly work out of the same or become loose.
'ith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a pers ective view of one of my improved s ikes; `ig. 2 is a side view of the same; Flig. 3 is an end view, looking toward the point; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section,
taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes my improved spike which is construeted in rectangular form han'ng a body 2, which is square in cross-section and provided on its outer four faces with longitudinal grooves 3, constructed in curvilinear form in cross-section and these grooves 3 extend from the lower end of the spike to a point adjacent to its opposite end, on which atter is formed a )rojecting head 5, of rectangular form. '111e lower end of the spike is tapered or pointed as shown at 4, to produce sharpened cutting edges. These grooves 3 form 011 the body of the spike longitudinally extending corner flanges having rounded non-cutting edges which follow in the path of the cutting edges and prevent splitting of the tie or sleeper when said spike Specification o! Letters Patent.
Application tiled March 15, 1906. Serial No. 306,278.
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
is driven therein. The rounded non-cutting edges are provided along their lengths and at suitable distances apart with transverse notches 6, having their lower` walls disposed in planes perpendieularly to the longitudinal axis of the s iike to form llat engaging shoulders 7, which serve to be embedded into the fibers of the wood after the spike has been completely driven into the tie, the outer walls of these notches is inclined upwardly and outwardly to permit of the shoulders to be embedded in the fibers of the tie, and said rounded nonscutting corner edges of the spike merge into the cutting edges at the spike point so as to permit of the same entering the tie.
It will be readily understood that a spike constructed as above described may .be readily driven into a tie and its removal is almost impossible because of the engagement.
of the shoulders of the notches 6, with the grain of the wood.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is,-
A spike of the type described having its side walls provided with longitudinal groo"es of curvilinear form in cross-section and forming on the spike longitudinally extending corner llanges having rounded non-cutting edges, said edges being provided along their lengths and at suitable distances apart with transverse notches, said notches having their lower walls disposed in planes p .rpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the spike to form llat engaging shoulders, and their outer walls inclined upwardly and outwardly and the rounded edges of the spike merging into sharpened cutting edges at the spike point.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witmesses.
ANTON EISEUREICII.
