2 SHEETS-SHEET I.
I jzacvafor 61 JAMES H. PROTHERO, onc noaoo, ILLINOIS.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llli nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inDental Face-Bows, of which the following is a s ecilication.
My invention re ates to improvements in dental face-bows such as are used by dentists for registering the correct relation between.
.the natural alveolar borders and .condylar processes of the lower jaw in the living subjectand is capable of adjustment to the occluding frame in such manner as to record the same relation between the plaster models and frame hinges as was sustained by the natural alveolar borders to their condyles or hinges.
The es ecial object of my improvements is' to provi e a dental face-bow having on each of its ends adjustable supporting means capable of universal movement and adapted to support the said face-bow while adjusting the contact rods over the outer ends of the condyles and for holding said facebow in position after it has been properly adjusted.
My im )rovements can be made a art of the denta face-bow by a proper modi cation Fig.1; Fig. 3 a view of the underside of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 a. longitudinal sectional view of a frag-- mentof my improvement com )rising, an ear tip, supporting rod with its sleeve and coil spring. Fig. 5 a perspective view of that. portion of the dental face-bow which I claim as my improvement; and Fig. 6 an elevation view of a fragment of the dental fat-show.
Referring to the drawing in detail the reference numeral 7 represents a U-shnned frame made referably from a steel ro or tube. Slidab y arranged on the central portion of the said frame is a universal Glam 8 having an opening 9 to receive and lJOlt a trial plate support 10. Secured-on each end of the said frame is a cross head or bearing 11 having a threaded slot-ted end to receive the clamping nut 12. Arranged. in each of said Specification of Letters Patent.

\ bearings is a contact rod 13 provided on its inner end with a head 14 for engaging the condyles. Each of the rods 13 is longitudinally adjustable as indicated by the dotted lines 13*, Fig. 3.
The mechanism, as described above in detail, is of the character in general use and forms no part of my invention proper which latter consists of two separate adjustiTnn 'oF IoE.
ing and supporting means or mechanismsslidably mounted on the ends of the frame 7. In said adjusting and su porting means 15 indicates a sleeve slidab ymount-ed on the frame 7, and carrying a set screw 16 for engagement with said sleeve, and provided with a slot to receive the pin 17 projecting from the frame, and having at one end two perforated projections 18, and having at its opposite end two guides 19. Arranged between said guides is an arm 20 carrying a set screw 21 for engagement with the sleeve 15, and having one end hinged between the projections 18, and carrying on its opposite end a sleeve 22 having in one end a removable tubular nut 23. Slidably arranged in each of said sleeves is a supporting rod 24 having an annular collar 26 for engagement with the nut 2-3, and provided on its inner end with a hollow ear tip 25 of suitable sha e for fitting into the external car and pe Ioratcd so that when adjusted it will not interfere with the hearing of the living The longitudinal adjustment of IlIG IOdS 2-1 as indicated by the dotted lines 24 in Fig. 3; the vertical adjustment of the car tips 25 as indicated by the dotted lines 25 in Fig. 2; and. the longitudinal movement of the sleeves 15 as indicated by the dotted lines 15 in Fi 1 permits a back and forward, a vertical and a side to side movement of the dental face-bow thereby perniittii the contact rods to be accurately adjuste g to the condyle ends and in which position it is firmly supported by means of the ear tips '25 resting in the ears.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A dental face-how provided at each eng' with a contact rod and a supporting ro 2. A dental face-bow provided at each end with a contact rod and a supporting rod, the latter being shdably connected with the faee-bow and having a vertical and 5 longitudinal adjustment.
3. The combination with a dental face- .bow having adjustable contact rods, of ad-- justable supportim rods adjustably connected with the ends of the face-bow frame 0 and having ear tips for fitting into the external openin in the ears.
4. A dental face-bow provided at each end with a longitudinally adjustable contact rod and a supporting rod slidably con- 5 nected with the frame of the face-bow and having also a vertical and longitudinal movement.
5. In a face-bow of the character described, a U -shaped frame provided at each end with a cross head or hearin contact rods ad ustably mounted in said bear ings, sleeves slidably mounted on the. ends JAMES H. PROTHERO.
