Description
No. 894,778. PATENTED JULY 28, 1908. M HOHNER MOUTH ACCORDION. APPLICATION FILED FEB.18, 1908.
of box 10 is centrally UNITED STATES MATTHIAS HOHNER, OF TROSSINGEN, GE NEW YO RMANY, ASSIGNOR TO HANS HOHNER, OF BK, N. Y.
MOUTH-ACCORDION.
No. 894,778. Specification of Application filed February 1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHLAS HOHNER, a citizen of Germany, residing at Trossingen, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mouth-Accordions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mouth accordion which is so construct-ed that it may be laced on the table while being played, in ieu of being manually supported as heretofore. In this way the playing of the instrument is facilitated and better effects may be obtained.
The invention embodies several features of construction hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan of my improved mouth accordion; Fig. 2 a bottom view with the base plate removed, and Fig. 3 a cross section on line 33, Fig. 1.
A rectangular box 10, constituting the wind chest, has an integral top 11 and a removable bottom 12, which is provided with feet 13, so that the instrument can be supported upon a table. One of the long sides perforated for the re ception of a coupling 14: secured to the rear end of a flexible tube 15, the front end of which carries a mouthpiece 16. By means of this tube, air may be blown into or drawn out of the wind chest, while the latter is sup ported upon a table at a distance from the player.
From the top plate 11 depend a pair of longitudinal rails 17, 18, to which is secured the reed-plate 19. The cells 20 are formed above the reed-plate between the rails, and communicate by air openings 21, in plate 11, with a recess 22 extending along the bottom of an undercut key-board 23. Air openings 21 are controlled by disk-valves 24, the spring-influenced stems 25 of which are guided in tubular extensions 26 of key-board 23, and are topped by the keys 27 for playing the air. The keys 28 for the bass notes are also carried by key-board 23, but are spaced from the other keys, so as to be distinguishable therefrom. The reed-plates 29 for these bass keys are also contained within wind chest 10.
Letters Patent. Patented July 28, 1908.
8, 1908. Serial No. 416,620.
Opposite to air tube 15 there is fitted within the wind chest, a shield 30 for protecting the reeds from the moisture contained in the blow-air. This shield is curved around the bottom of the reed-plate and is secured, at its rear edge, to a suitable support 31. An opening 32 in the back of the shield permits the air to reach those reeds which are covered by the same. As the reeds, with the construction described, are located in the wind chest, the importance of protecting the same from the moisture of the blow-air is apparent.
The recess 22 of key-board 23 communicates with a sound chamber 33 extending along the key-board. This sound chamber is formed by an oblique plate 34, engaging with one edge a groove 35 of key-board 23, while its other edge rests on top plate 11. Into sound chamber 33 open a number of sound tubes 36, by which the fullness and quality of the tone is improved.
It will be seen that by the construction described, the instrument may be played while sup orted upon a table, and that by the use of a single key-board containing all the keys, the latter all face the player, so that a ready manipulation of the same may be effected.
I claim:
1. A mouth accordion rovided with a wind chest, an inclosed reed plate, apertured cells within the wind chest above said plate, a key board having a lower recess, valves adapted to establish communication between the cells and said recess, and a flexible tube communicating with the wind chest, substantially as specified.
2. A mouth accordion provided with a wind chest, an inclosed reed-plate, a flexible tube communicating with the wind chest, a
