To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DE WITT BRUCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, county of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention has for its object to provide a novel pipe for smokers use, which shall be inexpensive to make, strong and durable and easy to take apart and put together.

With these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel tobacco pipe, of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts.

10 denotes the bowl which may be of any ordinary or preferred configuration, and 11 a shank shown as formed integral with the bowl and provided with the usual longitudinal opening 12 and with a recess 13 in its outer end which may be threaded, as in Fig. 1, or unthreaded, as in Fig. 6, as preferred.

The shank and stem are detachably secured together by means of a center-piece 17 having on opposite sides hubs 18 and 19, respectively, and provided with a longitudinal opening 20 through it. At the base of the stem is a recess 21 which is preferably threaded, as shown, and is engaged by a thread 22 on hub 19. Hub 18 may be provided with a thread 23, as in Figs. 1 rand 3, to enga e a corresponding thread in recess 13 in the s ank or said hub may be smooth if preferred, as in Figs. 6 and 7, and made to just lit recess 13 with a frictional engagement when said recess is unthreaded.

The vitally important feature of the present invention is .the cleaner or reamer, indicated by 25. This cleaner is made from sheet metal or other suitable material shaped to semi-circular form and preferably provided with beveled ends, as at 26. The cleaner extends practically the entire length of both the shank and the stem, the openingsin which are in alinement with the opening in the center-piece. The cleaner is shown as made in a single j ointless piece which extends through the center-piece and is rigidly secured to the center-piece by means of aplug 27 which may be semi-circular, as shown, or tubular and is preferably made slightly tapering (see Fig. 4).

In assembling, the cleaner when properly located in the center-piece is locked in place by means of the plug. The stem is preferably secured to the center-piece by a threaded connection and the center-piece may be secured to the shank by either a threaded or frictional connection, as in Figs. 1 and 6, respectively. In use, the rotation of the stem on the cleaner in removing the stem from the center-piece causes the cleaner to remove from the opening in the stem and carry with it all the tarry matter that has collected in the stem. Likewise, when the center-piece and shank are rotated relatively to each other in detaching the center-piece from the shank, the cleaner will collect and carry with it all the tarry matter that has collected in the shank, thus leaving the stem and shank relatively clean. The centerpiece and cleaner may be easily cleaned by means of hot water or alcohol.

I thus provide a simple, inexpensive and practically self-cleaning pipe as all of the tarry matter that has collected in the shank and the stem is necessarily removed therefrom in detaching said parts from the centerpiece by which the cleaner is carried.

I do not claim herein the center piece having a size relatively to the stem and shank to enable it to be grasped when the parts of the pipe are assembled, said center-piece having cleaner members extending in both directions through the stem and shank so that the center-piece may be held while either the stem or the shank is rotated relatively to the cleaner members, as the same forms the subject matter of an application Serial Number 421,776, iiled by me March 18, 1908.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. A pipe comprising a shank, a stem, a center-piece having a portion which may be grasped to rotate it, and also having portions for detachable connection with the shank and stem, said shank, stem, and center-piece having longitudinal openings in alinement, and a semi-circular cleaner removably secured to the center-piece and extending in both directions to engage the openings in the shank and stem, whereby said parts are efectually cleaned by rotation in detaching them from the center-piece.

2. A pipe comprising a shank, a stem, a center-piece to which said parts are detach* ably secured, said shank, stem and centerpiece having longitudinal openings in alinement, an integral semi-circular cleaner Which passes through the center-piece and engages the openings in the shank and stem, and a plug by Which the cleaner is locked to the center-piece.

3. A pipe of the character described comprising a shank, a stem and a center-piece having a middle portion substantially the same size dianietrically as the shank and stem and having threaded ends to which the shank and stem are respectively connected., said parts "having longitudinal openings in alinement, and a semi-circular cleaner removably secured to the center piece and extending in both directions to engage the openings in the shank and stem.
