ROUN D EXTENSION -TABLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed October 17, 1907. Serial No. 397,767.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE PoNET, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Round Extension-Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to furniture and its object is to provide a new and improved round extension table, having a top formed of a fixed center-piece, and segmental sections, capable of being folded under the fixed center or extended flush with the latter, to increase the size of the table top.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
igure 1 is an inverted plan view of the improvement, showing the table-top extended," 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the improvement showing the segmental top sections folded under the center-piece of the table top; Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
The top of the table consists of a rounded center-piece A and segmental sections B, capable ofbeing either folded beneath the centerpiece A when a small round table is desired (see Figs. 3, 4 and 5), or extended flush with the center-piece A, to form an enlarged round table, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The center-piece A is mounted on the usual frame C, and legs D, adapted to rest on the floor. Each of the segmental sections B, of which there are preferably four, is formed of a middle piece B, and end pieces B B connected by hinges E to the middle piece to fold upon the under side thereof, and each end piece B is provided at its under side with a flange B for the adjacent end piece B of the next section B to rest on.
The middle pieces B of the several sections B are connected by hinges F with the under side of the center-piece A, to permit of swinging the middle pieces B down under the center-piece A within the frame C, as
[ plainly indicated order to hold the in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. In middle pieces B of the segmental sections B in an extended position, supports G are provided in the form of slides, mounted to slide in bearings H attached to the under side of the centerpiece A, and each sliding support G is provided near its outer end with a depending knob G, adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for drawing the support out into active position, as'shown in Figs 1 and 2, or pushing the sliding support inward out of engagement with the middle pieces B, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The end pieces B and B of adjacent sections B are supported in an extended position by a bracket I, connected by a hinge J with the corresponding table leg D, the said bracket I when extended or swung outward forming a sup ort for the flange B previously mentionec, and which is secured to one of the end pieces B and supports the adjacent end piece B Now when the segmental sections B are extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, they are supported by the sliding supports G and the hinged brackets I, to form a round table, and when it is desired to form a smaller round table of the size of the center-piece A, then the slides G are pushed inward and the brackets I are swung inward into the positions shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, to permit of holding the end pieces B B onto the under side of the middle pieces B, and to allow of swinging the end pieces B inward into the space confined by the frame 0, so that the segmental sections B when in this folded position are completely out of the way of the knees of the persons seated at the small round table.
In order to lock the folded segmental sections B in position, suitable devices may be provided, such, for instance, as cleats K, pivoted on a post L, arranged centrally on the under side of the center A, the said cleats K engaging two diametrically disposed segmental sections B, while the other two diametrically-disposed sections B are engaged and locked in place by hooks N, likewise attached to the post L. It is understood that the oppositely disposed segmental sections locked in place by the cleats K are first folded inward and locked in place by the cleats (see Figs. 3 and 4), after which the other two sections B are folded inward on top of the previously folded sections B and then looked in place by the hooks N,
folded upon as will be readily understood by to Figs. 3 and 5. The hinges F for the several middle. pieces B are made of as many joints as are required to allow the folding of the middle pieces within the frame 0, as above described and illustrated in Figs. 3, 4i and 5.
When it is desired to extend the table, the sections B held locked by the hooks N are first unlocked and swung outward, flush with the center-piece A, and then locked in this position by pulling the corresponding slides G outward. VVhen-this has been done, the other two sections B are unlocked by the cleats K and swung outward, flush with the center-piece A, and locked in this position by pulling the corresponding sliding supports G outward. The end pieces B213 are then extended to complete the round table extension, and the brackets J are then swung outward, t6 sup ort the said end pieces, as previously exp ained.
The round extension table shown and de scribed is very serviceable for'use in hotels, restaurants and the like, as it permits increasing the size of the table for seating the desired number of persons at the table, and without disturbing the decorations on the table and held on the center-piece A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A round extension table, consisting of a square frame, legs at the corners of the frame, a round center piece on the frame, segmental sections, each formed of a middle piece and end pieces hinged to the middle piece to fold upon the same, one end piece of each section being provided with a projection upon which the adjacent end piece rests, a plurality of hinges connecting the middle piece of each section with the under side of the center piece, whereby the sections can fold inside of the frame, slides on the under side of the supporting the middle pieces brackets hinged to the legs the end pieces of adjacent pivoted to the center iece for holding two of the middle pieces of the sections folded, and hooks carried by the center piece for engaging the other two middle pieces of the sections to hold them the first-named sections.
2. A round extension table, comprising a center piece for of the sections, for supporting sectlons, cleats reference rectangular frame, legs j segmental sections,
sca i9 at the corners of the frame, a round center piece on the frame, each formed of a middle piece and end pieces hinged to the middle piece to fold upon the same, one end piece of each section having a flange upon which the adjacent end piece rests, a plurality of hinges connecting the middle piece of each section with the under side of the center piece, whereby the sections can fold inside of the frame, slides on the under side of the center piece for supporting the middle pieces of the sections, brackets hinged to the legs for supporting the end pieces of adjacent sections, and means for holding the sections folded inside of the frame.
3. A round extension table, comprising a rectangular frame, legs carried by the frame, a round center piece on the frame, segmental sections, each formed of a middle piece and ,end pieces hinged to the middle piece, a
plurality of hinges connecting the middle iece of each section with the under side of the center piece, whereby the sections can fold inside of the frame, means for holding the sectionsextended, cleats pivoted to the center piece for holding two of the sections folded, and hooks carried by the center piece for engaging the other-two sections to hold them folded. I
4. A round extension table, comprising a rectangular frame, legs carried by the frame, a round center iece on the frame, segmental sections, each ormed of a middle piece and end pieces hinged to the middle piece to fold upon the same, a plurality of hinges for connecting the middle piece of each section with the under side of the center piece, the number of hinges for two opposing sections being greater than for the other two sections, whereby the sections can be folded inside of the frame with two of the sections on the other two sections, means for holding the sections folded, and means for holding the sections extended.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LAURENCE PONET.
