To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. NnsMrrI-I, citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Flan ing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the flanging of metal and is designed to reduce the hand labor and to provide a clamp for the metal to be flanged, a power ram cooperating there with the ram and clamp being adapted to be tilted in relation to each other and one or the other of said parts or both adapted also to have longitudinal movement so as to present the entire length of the metal to be flanged to the action of the ram.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a vertical section of the clamp with power means for tilting the same, the ram with its support being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete device. Figs. 3 4 and 5 show different relative positions of the clamp and the ram. Fig. 6 shows in detail the support for the tilting clamp this comprising in this figure a rolling base. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the mechanism of Fig. 6. Figs. 8 and 9 show means for tilting the clamp by hand through a worm and worm wheel.
As shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5 the plate to be flanged is clamped between upper and lower clamping members A B. These members are suitably sup orted, preferably as in Figs. 6 and 7, on a rollingbase as at a I), and having meshing teeth 0 to prevent displacement in the rolling motion. I do not limit myself however, to this arrangement as any other suitable construction permitting the tilting action with safety may be substituted. As shown in Figs. 1 and 6 at D I may use a power cylinder to tilt the clamping members, this cylinder being pivoted upon a base at and having pivoted connection with the clamping frame through the piston rod 6, or as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 I may utilize a worm wheel 6 and a worm f actuated by a handle 9 so as to tilt the clamping members by hand. As shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, I secure any desired position of the clamping members by the tilting mechanism described and place the edge of the metal to be flanged in the position desired in relation to the ram C which is supported so as to be longitudinally adjusted on a frame D, this frame in turn being pivotally mounted on pintles or projections d j ournaled in the bearings d so as to be tilted and thus secure the tilting of the ram into the desired position for work in relation to the clamping members. The ram may be actuated from the power cylinder E. A lever L or like device may govern and control the rapidity and intensity of the blow delivered by the ram.
The sheet S to be flanged, Figs. 1 and 2, is placed between the clamps A and B and rmly held in position. The clamp and ram frame D are then tilted to the desired angle. The ram C is moved along the face of the i sheet S by means of a screw N actuated by a I motor M or other simple and suitable mechanism. The blow required for flanging the sheet S is then delivered by the ram C and controlled by the operator in the same manner as the ordinary steam hammer.
It will be seen that the ram C is so arranged that it may travel the full width of the sheet S, or it may be retained at any point, and that the blow may be delivered from any angle at the will of the operator.
What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus for flanging plates and sheets, a pair of clamping members to hold plate to be flanged, a power ram acting in conjunction with said clam ing members, means for tilting one of sai co-acting ele ments about a horizontal axis, and means for moving one of said elements longitudinally with respect to the other;
2. In an apparatus for flanging sheets and plates, a pair of clamping members, a power ram acting at right angles to the clamping members, means for tilting one or the other of said parts about a horizontal axis, and means for moving the ram bodily in a direction parallel with the face of the clamping members.
