ADJUSTABLE VEHICLE-AXLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELMER A. HETTICK and JUSTIN I. SHARP, citizens of the United States, residing at Dearborn, in the county of Platte and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Vehicle-Axles and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
The object of our invention is to rovide an axle-bar suited to any kind of vehicle, the arms of which, when worn, bent or otherwise injured, can be readily removed and re laced with new arms without the aid of a lacksmith or other mechanic.
We accomplish our object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying-drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective of an axle-arm; Fig. 2 is a perspective of one end of the axlebar, its arm removed; Fig. 3 is a perspective of the arm removed from the axle-bar; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through one end of the axle-bar and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section throu h an axle-arm, broken away.

A represents the axle-bar and B B the arms thereof. The ends A A of said axlebar are threaded as shown in Fig. 2. The arms B B are each provided with a collar B, which collar has an interior thread C to engage with said thread on the exterior of the end of the axle-bar. The interior of each of the ends of said axle-bars is tubular and provided with threads D D. An outwardly threaded bar D within and spaced from said collar projects out of the end of said collar and is adapted to be screwed into the end of the axle-bar and engage with the threads in the interior thereof. A perforation, h, extends through said collar and the threaded end of the axle-bar is provided with a circular cavity hof corresponding size countersunk slightly below the base of the exterior thread. When an arm has been screwed tightly into engagement with one of the threaded ends of the axle-bar a set screw H is inserted through said perforation h, the end of said screw engaging with cavity h and the arm is held in rigid position on the axle-bar until the set screw is withdrawn and the arm unscrewed. The outer end of each arm, J, is threaded and adapted to receivea square nut K to facilitate the screwing and tightening of the arm upon the axle-bar.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vehicle axle an arm, an enlarged collar integral with the inner end thereof, its inside threaded, a threaded bar integral with said arm central within said collar and spaced therefrom, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of an axle, the tubular ends thereof threaded on both outside and inside, each having a set screw cavity, arms, the inner end of each threaded on the outside and of reduced circumference adapted to engage with the inside threads of the tubular ends of the axle, a collar integral with each arm threaded on the inside having a set screw perforation to correspond with said cavity and adapted to engage with the threaded outside of the tubular end of the axle, and a set screw, its head buriedin said collar, its point engaging with the cavity in the threaded bar of the arm, substantially as shown and set forth.
3. In a vehicle axle, a tubular end threaded on the outside and inside, cast integral with the axle, an arm rovided at its inner end with a collar threaded within to enga c with the outside thread on the tubular ax e and a threaded bar within said collar to engage with the inside threads of said tubular axle end, said collar and bar being integral with said arm, substantially as set forth and shown.
