LEE B. HANCOCK, OF BICHMOND, AND WILLIAM JACKSON STERLING, OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEE B. HANCOCK, of Richmond, county of Henrico, State of Virginia, and W'ILLIAM JACKSON STERLING, of Portsmouth, county of Norfolk, and State of Virginia, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in burglar alarms, and especially in that class of burglar alarms having a cartridge holder, and a hammer for exploding the same when a window or other closure is opened; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view of our invention as in use on a window frame. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view from the under side of the alarm illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the trigger.
By our invention we provide an alarm of the character referred to having a main frame composed of a plate of metal bent to form a cartridge holder, a flange whereby the frame may be secured to a-suitable support and having a guide in which the hammer operates together with a spring for actuating the hammer, and a trigger for holding and releasing the hammer.
Referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 it will be noticed that the main frame A has a back plate A extended and bent at A to form a cartridge holder and also bent at its upright edge to provide a flange A for connection with a window frame B or other suitable structure, and a plate A is bent from the back plate A at a rightangle to the flange A and is slotted longitudinally at A to form a guide for the hammer C. This hammer C is pivoted at C to the back plate A and is actuated by the spring D secured at one end at D to the back plate and at its other end at D to the hammer C, and this hammer C projects through the guide slot A has a head or portion C to strike the cartridge, and is provided on its opposite or back edge with a slot C opening toward the pivot C and extending approximately in the direction of length of the hammer, and adapted to receive one of the forwardly projecting lugs Specification of Letters Patent.
Application fi1ed May 16, 1906.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Serial No. 317,195.
E on the arms E of a T shaped trigger E which is pivoted at E so it may be swung to either side to bring either of its forwardly projecting lugs E into the slot C to hold the hammer as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the alarm is secured by screws passing through of a staple, see Fig. 1, whose prongs F may be driven into the window sash in such manner as to secure the cam projection F at the desired angle. In the operation of this construction should any one raise the window sash the cam projection F will operate upon the trigger to free the same from engagement with the hammer, and permit the latter to be actuated by the spring D to explode the cartridge.
We claim The alarm herein described consisting of the main frame having a back plate provided with an extension bent to form a cartridge holder and having at one edge a flange at a rightangle to the plane of the back plate and adapted for connection with a suitable sup- Eort and provided at an angle with said ange with a wing in a plane at approximately a rightangle to the plane of the back plate and extending between the cartridge holder and the said first flange, the said wing having a longitudinal slot forming a guide for the hammer throughout the length of the stroke of the latter, a spring actuated hammer pivoted to the back plate and projecting through the guide slot in the wing and having a head portion to engage a cartridge in the cartridge holder, and a trigger for holding the hammer, substantially as set forth.
