Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK M. BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of MiddleseX and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files or Binders for Paper-Covered Books, Pamphlets, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates generally to a temporary cover for paper covered books or pamphlets and especially to a temporary cover for the covering of magazine periodicals and paper or cloth covered telephone call number books.

' Magazines, telephone call number books, pamphlets and periodicals covered with paper covers soon become soiled, torn and broken by handling, unless protected by suitable covers, consequently a cover that will prevent these things is of value and one that can be used easily and removed and put on another book without injury to book or temporary cover is most desirable.

To this end my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the devices hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my temporary binder, illustrating same when in use showing method of holding book in place. Fig. 2 is a view of the metallic or board back in a horizonal position without cloth and board binding. Fig. 3 is a View from the bottom or lower end of the temporary binder showing metallic reinforced back and a portion of the cloth and board cover. Fig. 4 is the metallic ring used to keep the metallic rod in place and sustain the temporary binder from a hook or other appliances.

Aindicates a combination cloth and board covering secured against an inner backing B, preferably of metal having folds as illustrated, A metal strip G is secured to the backing B by rivets 1, 2 and 3, and provided with ends F and G, bent at right angles to the strip C.

v The end F is made with a round hole and the end G with an elliptical hole D for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.

E represents a tie rod adapted to be passed through the holes in ends F and G and secure the magazine in the binder. This rod E is bent at right angles at one end adjacent to end F. and at its other end, where it passes through end G, is flattened, which enables the rod in one position to pass readily through the elliptical hole D, but when turned a quarter turn securely retains itself against longitudinal movement.

A split ringHis provided and adapted to be inserted in an opening in the end of rod E adjacent to end G, to preclude any possibility of escape of the rod and also serve as a hanger for the binder and book supported thereby. The split of this ring 11 is indicated at J.

In operation the rod E is removed and the book for magazine placed against the backing B and opened about its center. Rod E is then inserted through ends F and G, and given a quarter turn so that its flattened end is retained against movement "in opening D. Ring H is then inserted in the hole in the end of the rod and the device is ready for use.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A temporary binder comprising a metallic strip provided with upturned ends, a circular opening in one of said upturned ends and an elliptical opening in the other, in combination with a rod having one of its ends bent at an angle and its opposite end flattened for insertion through the elliptical opening and retained therein when turned.

2. A temporary binder comprising a metallic strip, provided with upturned ends, a circular opening in one of said upturned ends and an elliptical opening in the other, in combination with a rod having one of its ends bent at an angle and its opposite end flattened for insertion through the elliptical opening and retained therein when turned,

said flattened end provided with an aperture, and a split ring adapted to be passed through said a erture.

3. n a device of the character described, the combination with an outer covering and an inner metallic backing, of a metal strip secured across the center of the backing having ends bent at right angles thereto, said ends having openings therein, one opening being round and the other elliptical, a rod located in said openings having one end bent at right angles and its other end flattened to pass through the elliptical opening and retained when turned.
