COMBINED MANIFOLDING BILL AND, ENVELOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JAMES H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the colihty of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Combined Manifolding Bill and Envelop, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to' a combined mani- The object of the invention is in a ready and practical manner to obviate mistakes goods and collecting therefor; furthermore to render it possible to keep a tab on the driver whereby mistakes of any kind that may be made shall be instantly detected.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists,
generally stated, in an article of the class described embodying in its construction, an envelop constituting a customers slip, a drivers return sli and a merchant's slip, each being a dup icate of the others as to the matter written thereon, whereby should an error occur in the entries on any one of the slips detection is almost inevitable.
The invention consists further in the novel construction and combination of parts of a combined manifolding bill and envelop, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one form of the invention, viewed from the front. Fig. 2 is a similar view viewed from the rear. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the blank from which the article exhibitedv in Figs. 1 and 2 is made. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is another view of the envelop shown in Fig. 4, the flaps being raised and the manifolding sheet in position. Fig. 6, is a view of the envelop shown in Figs. 1 and 2 width the manifolding sheet in position.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the article is made from a single sheet of paper, comprising three connected members 1, 2 and-3, the member 1 being the merchants slip, the member 2 the drivers sli and the member 3 the back of the en- Ve op, the face of which isformed by an ex- Specification of Letters Patent Application filed December 28, 1905. Serial No. 293,645..
recanted July 14, 19cc.
tension 4 (projecting laterally from the member 3, an constituting the customers slip. Each of these slips is appropriately ruled to receive entries, and bear printed legends such, for mstance, as the name ofthefirm using the device, a serial number, the amount of change to be sent, the amount to be col-.
lected, and any other data that it may be desired to exhibit in carrying the invention into efiect. The extension 4 has agummed edge 5 that is sealed around the back or member 3,. as shown in Fig. 2, and a flap fi-for closing the mouth of the envelo formed by the member 3 and extension 4. he inner side of the envelo has a paraflin lining 7 which may be pro need by coating the member 3 and extension 4 with parafiin, or, as shown, by asting a sheet of paraflin aper to the mem er 3 at 8. The object of t is paraflin lining is to revent artic es having gummed surfaces rom adherin to the interior of the envelop,
as it frequent y happens that a customer Wlll have a merchant purchase postage stamps and forward them with an order. Some firms use trading stamps that are gummed, and others trade coupons that are similarly gummed, and it frequently ha pens that these will become stuck together in the drivers pocket and thus become useless. By the provision of the envelop, stamps and other gummed objects may be safely transmitted to. the urchaser, along with change for money. Til ber 2 is provided with a weakened or per forated l1ne'9 forming in conjunction with the member 3 a tab 10 that is adapted to be sealed to the lower'end of the face of the customers' slip 3, and thus seal the lower end of the envelop. The weakened line also permits ready detachment of the driver s slip The sli 2 is rovided near its lower end with a wea ened ine 11 which will permit ready detachment of the merchant s slip therefrom. In the use of this form of the device, the customers name and order is written on the merchant s slip and is transferred by interposed carbon or other manifolding material to the slips 2 and 3. Should an order be received by mail, telephone or otherwise, in which a customer requests that change for a certain amount be forwarded with the goods, this change will beinclosed in an envelop along with the trading stamps or the like. Thus, for instance, if a bill came to $5.30, and the customer requested that change for $10.00 be forwarded e upper portion of the memwith the order, $4.70 will be inclosed in the envelo When the goods are to be delivered the slip 1 is torn from the sli 2 and is retained by the merchant, which w l serve as a check upon the driver. When the goods are delivered to a customer, the driver will detach the slip 2 from the slip 3, and return this with the collection to the merchant. Should any discrepancy exist, it can instantly be detected at the time.
As a further feature of novelty, the extension 4, may have its bottom portion printed to represent a coupon 12 having any specified value that the merchant may elect to attach to it, and this will be retained by the customer and empl 0 ed accordin to directions furnished. y g
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the envelo 13 and drivers return sli 14 will be made rom one iece of paper, and the merchants slip 15 w 1 be pasted or otherwise secured to the drivers slip. Both of these slips are provided with weakened lines 16 which will permit the upper portion of the drivers slip to be sealed to the face of the envelop, thus to seal its bottom and also to permit ready detachment of the two slips. in the manner described.
The forms of the invention herein shown and described, are two of that ma man be employed and as other moditibations w' be obvious, detailed illustration thereof is deemed unnecessary.
I claim:
1. An envelo havin an open end sealing flap and provi ed wit a downwardly extending slip, said slip being creased near the bottom edge of said envelop and also formed below said crease witha weakened line portion for formin a tab for closing the lower end of the enve o said extension also having atits lower e ge an additional extension provided with a weakened line ortion, and a manifolding sheet insertible etween said slip and one wall of said envelop.
2. An envelop having an open end sealing flap and partly formed of a lateral extension thereof overlying 'the back ortion of said envelop and secured at its 0t erwise free edge to said back portion, said envelop being provided with a downwardl extending strip loosel overlying the wal formed by said latera extension, and detachably joined to the envelop, and a manifoldin sheet insertible between said slip and sai wall.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, Ihave hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. SHAW.
