Description

No. 893,163. PATENTED JULY 121, 190s.
W. c. MFLMEISTBRl GOUPLING P05l BLEOTRIGAL UONDUGTORS, APPLIOATIQN FILED 'JUNE 6, 1907.
Avful Improvement PATENT- oFFreE.
WILLIAM c. HAFEMEISTER, or CLEVELAND, omo, 'AssIGNoia BY MEsNE- ASSIGNMENTS, To THE VAN DORNELEGTRIC ANDMANUFACTURING COMPANY.
, Specification of Letters Patent'.
'Patented'.ruly 14, 190s.
Application met June c, 1907.'v sel-MNO. 377,533.
,To all whom; it may concer/1t.'
Be it known v that I, WILLIAM MEISTER, a citizen 'of theUnited States, resi,- dent of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented a new and use- 'm1 Couplings for Electrical Conductors, of which the ,following is a'specilcation, the principle of' the invention'A being herein explained and the best. mode in which A'I lhave contemplatedA applyin that-principle so as to ldistinguish it. from ot erinventions. i
Myinvention relates to c plings'for connectrng together Aelectrical conductors such,
as wires or the like, l
The objlct of the invention is the'provision of a coup able members, so thatthe same will not re-` quire to be assorted into pairs, but may-be em loyed indiscriminately.
-4 in t e claims.
v o the accomplishment of this object said invention consists of the means hereinafter` fully described and particularly pointed out The annexed.- drawing andthe following description set forth in detail certain mech# anism Aembodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but 'one of various mechanicalformalin-whichA the` Aprinciple of the invention mayvbe used- In said annexed drawing; ure 1 represents in side lelevation two of t e duplicate or similar, coupling members dis osed reliminarily to their b'eing intergage or loc ed together; Fig. 2 represents such coupling membersv in intergagpd or assembled orm; and Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the en# gaging faces of 'one of said members. Y
I amaware that heretofore couplings of 4the character in hand have been devised wherein a projectirg tongue has been employed on one of th vcontacting faces 0f the member's to be enga ed by a corresponding groove or recess onjlt e face of the other of said members. Obfriously, however, toform a coupling of members of this sort requlres a selection of a tongud member and a grooved member respectlv'e cou ling. In viewgf the frequent necessity of orming connections, where coupllngs of this character Aare employed, under -circumstances that renderit diiiicult to thus pick out or select' the desired members, thiscon-A struction entails considerable annoyance in use. A -O My invention, briefly statedcons1sts 1n members v being duplicates.
.member g that shall consist of intercln a'.,ngey
y as elements of such .female intergaging elements of the respective y faces, ofy two dierent members, of similar 'combined maleand .female intergagin elements on the faceiof, each member, a the.
' Thus, referring figures of reference, suchcou ling which may be of various fldrr'ns depending. on the particular field off'use for .which the couplingl is, designed, isV providedl to the ronits inclined contact'face with a groove. a/
extending lfrom the inner edge of said face iu the direction of its incline to theaxial line of the-member, and with a contiguously located tongue a, complementary to-such roove, and
extendin similarly 'to the outer e ge of such vinclined. ace. I Groove a is recessed and the tonguel undercut so as to Iconforrntherewith, f whereby a tight fitting joint is secured when such engaging faces are brought to ether. Engagement between the two faces is ad'l by simply moving one longitudinally roove ain the other, and -vice versa. `eckets- 'a are' provided `in the respective members in which are inserted and suitably secured the terminals of the conductors tobe joined, as will be readily understood.
`'In order to'make the joint between thev contact faces as tight as possible', both tongue ft2-and groovela are made of corresponding laterally tapering form, whereby, uponengagement being had as aforesaid, an absolute A of the other, the' tongue a? on the first entering the t is secured the entire length ofthe cut.
The tighter the parts are drawn together, ac-
cordingly. the better will be the electrical connection.
Othermodes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one v ex lained, change being made as regards t e mech nismhe'rein disclosed, rovided the means stated b any of the fo owing claims. or the equiva ent of such stated means be. employed. A.. j
I thereforeI particularly point out anddlstinctly claim as-my invention :--l ,l 1. In a coupling of the character descrlbed, the combinatlon of two. similar members having plane contact'faces, eachy of said faces be-A mg provided lwith a recessed roove andv undercut tongue alined with eac other and re- ,spectively adapted to re lster` with the tongue and ,groove on the ace4 ofthe other member. ,y j
2. In a coupling of the character described,
the combination of two similar members hav ing plane contact faces, eaclrof said faces being providedl'vvith a roove and tongue alined with each other an made of corresponding laterally tapering form, said groove and tongue being respectively adapted to register with the tongue and groove on the face of the other member.
3. in a coupling of the character described, the combination of two similar members having plane contact faces, each of said faces being provided with a recessed groove and undercut tongue alined with each other and made of corresponding laterally. tapering form, said groove and tongue being 4respectively adapted to register With the tongue ant groove on the face of the other member'.
4. ln a coupling of the character described, the combination of two substantially cylin- 'drical members provided With contact faces, similarly inclined with respect to the axes of said members, each of said faces being formed With a similar Dfroove extending in the direction of incline of said face and with a contiguous, similarly extending, tongue com 4 plementary to such groove.
5. In a coupling of the character described, the combination. of two substantially cylindrical -members rovided with contact faces similarly incline with respect to the axes f f said members, each of said faces being pro vided with a similar Oroove extending from the inner edge thereot in the direction of its incline, and with a contiguously located tongue complementary to such groove and extending similarly from the outer edge of said faces incline.
6. ln a coupling of the character described, the combination of two substantially cylinseance drical members provided with contact faces similarly inclined with respect to the axesof said members, each of said 'faces being provided With a similar groove extending from the inner edge thereof in the direction of its incline, and With a contiguously located tongue complementary to such groove and extending similarly fibni the outer edge of said faees incline, said \`tongue and groove being made of corresponding laterally tapering form.
7. As an article of mam1facture,\u coupling member having a contact face formed with u. recessed groove and with an undercut tongue alined with and complementary to such groove.
8. As an article of manufacture, a coupling member having a contact face formed with a recessed groove and with an undercut tongue alined with and complementary to such groove, said groove and tongue being made ol corres ending laterally tapered' form.
9. ills an article of manufacture, a du plicate cou ling member of substantially cylindrical orm having a contact face inclined with respect toits axis and'providcd with a recessed groove extending from the inner edge of such faces incline to such axis and with an undercut tongue alined with and complement-ary to such groove, such tongue extending from such axis to the outer edge of suon races incline, and said tongue and groove being made of correspondinglaterally tapered form.
