HAND-OPERATED MECHANISM FOR ROWBOATS.

Be it known that I, SVEN G. HALLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinckley, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Operated Mechanism for Rowboats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of hand operated mechanism for row boats which will be more easily actuated and more ellicient than the ordinary oars.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of the boat fitted with my improvements; Fig. 2 is an isometric view of my improvements, and Fig. 3 is a section through the shaft of one of the propellers.
In the drawings A represents an ordinary row boat. My invention consists of a-pair of shafts 2 having journal support 3 upon the gunwale of the boat. Each of the shafts has a downwardly extending portion 4 outside the boat u on the lower end ofwhich the propeller b ades 5 have hinge support 6. Each shaft 4 above the blade is enlarged to prevent sliding of the blade upon the shaft. The blades turn freely upon the shafts and are each provided upon their rear sides with horizontal bars 7 to limit their opening move ment. As illustrated in Fig. 2 the propeller blades are bent to prevent their entirely closing. The inner ends 8 of the supporting shafts 2 stand in alinement across the boat. Slidable upon each of the ends 8 is one end of a bar 9, the opposite end of each bar being provided with an outwardly extending handle 10. The bars 9 are provided with cooperating pins and openings 11 and 12 so that the bars may be fastened together where it is desired to simultaneously actuate the propeller shafts.
In operation where it is desired to row straight ahead the bars 9 may be joined together to simultaneously operate the prepeller shafts. As the propeller shafts are turned carrying the propeller blades forwardly through the water the pressure of the Specification of Letters Patent.

sitely turning the shafts the propeller blades will be drawn rearwardly and the pressure of the water between the blades will open them and act as oars to propel the boat. If it is desired to row in the opposite direction the propeller blades will be oppositely turned to reverse their action. By having the blades so constructed that they will not close, the
blades when they are drawn back against the water instead of being swung upon their shafts by the pressure of the water will be opened on account of the pressure of the water between the blades. It will be evi dent that by turning the shafts sulliciently to carry the blades out of the water their position may be reversed. To operate the blades in opposite directions to turn the boat, the actuating bars will be separated as illustrated in Fig. 2.
If desired, the blades may be suitably fastened against turning upon the shafts in which case it would be necessary to manually turn the blades upon the shafts in order to reverse them.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a boat, a pair of independent horizontal shafts journaled across the gunwale of the boat, and having downwardly bent ends, a hinged propeller blade carried by the downwardly bent outer end of each shaft, a rearwardly extending handle secured upon the downwardly bent inner end of each shaft and means for detachably connecting said handles.
2. In combination with a boat, a pair of independent horizontal shafts j ournaled u )on the gunwale of said boat, a hinged prope ler blade carried by the downwardly extending end of each shaft, an actuating handle supported upon the inner end of each of said shafts, said handles being shdable towards each other and means for connecting said handles when brought together.
