SAFETY CORN-KNIFE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented June 30, 1908.

Application filed November 15, 1907. Serial No. 402,252.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that we, HARRY SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, and BASILIUs ZsivANovios, a subject of the Em eror of Austria-Hungary, both residing at hiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Corn- Knives, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corn knives, the object being, to provide a knife which will enable the cutting and trimming of corns or other callous portions of the foot without any danger of injuring the foot in any way.

Another object of our invention is, to provide a knife which is exceedingly simple and chea in construction, and one which can be readiy handled, so that the corn can be trimmed or cut as desired.

Another object of our invention is, to provide the body of the knife with a slot in which is mounted a blade which can be forced through the body, whereby the corn can be shaved similar to shaving a iece of wood.

These objects are obtainetfby the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l, is a perspective view of our improved knife. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3, is a bottom view of the body ofthe knife showing the position of the blade, and, Fig. 4, is another longitudinal section taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the body of our improved knife, which is provided with a convex surface and has extending upwardly from opposite sides arms B which are contracted and joined together to form a threaded socket B', the body being preferably formed of hard rubber or guttapercha, but it is of course understood that it can be formed of metal if desired.

Extending through the body is a slot C, in which is adjustably mounted a blade D, the blade being provided with slot D', through -which a screw E extends which works in a threaded bore F formed in the body, and it will be readily seen that by loosening the screw E the blade can be moved up and down in the body, so that the cutting edge will extend farther out on the convex surface of the body, or be withdrawn, whereby the size of shaving can be readil adjusted. The cutting edge of the knife eing curved as shown at D2, which enables the heart of the corn to be readily reached.

- Arranged in the threaded socket is a threaded shank of the handle H, which may be formed of any suitable material desired, and is provided with a cutaway portion I, adjacent at its upper end, having a threaded socket formed therein, adapted to receive the blade when removed from the body and be secured therein by the screw, whereby the blade can be readily sharpened when desired.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a knife with a convex surface through which the blade extends, which enables the knife to reach any corn or callous portion of the foot more readily than with knives of this character now in use and without any danger of inj uring the foot.

Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

l. A corn knife comprising a body having a convex surface, and provided with a slot, of a blade arranged in said slot and means for locking said blade.

2. A corn knife comprising a body provided with arms having a threaded socket, a blade adjustably mounted in said body and a handle arranged in the socket of the arms.

3. A corn knife comprising a body having a convex surface, and provided with a slot, of a blade mounted in the slot, a screw for securing said blade therein, arms formed on the body provided with a socket and a handle provided with a threaded shank adapted to fit in said socket.
