Description
No. 891,902. PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908. w. A. BOND.
GRINDING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED 0OT.3 L 1907.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. BOND, OF LYNNFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED SHOE MACHIN- ERY COMPANY, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OI NEW JERSEY.
GRINDIN G-MACHINE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynnfield, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth oflVIassachusetts, have invented certain Im rovements in Grinding-Machines, of which t e following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to grinding machines and has for its object to improve the construction and arrangement of machines of this class.
In carrying out the present invention I employ a carrier, upon. which the knives or other tools to be ground are supported, and. a suitable grinding device. The carrier is mounted for movement across the acting surface of the grinding device and for movement to and from operative relation with said device in order that the knives supported upon the carrier may be brought in contact with the grinding surface and then moved back and forth over said surface in the grinding operation.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, movement is imparted to the carrier across the acting surface of the grinding device and to and from operative relation with said device through the agency of a rod which is mounted for sliding and turning movement in a guideway which supports the carrier. The rod is provided with an up wardly extending arm which engages the carrier in such'manner that by oscillating the rod the carrier is reciprocated across the face of the grinding device and the arrangement is such that the carrier may be moved to and from operative relation with the grinding device by sliding the rod to and fro in the guideway.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the drawing, the figure is a view in perspective of a preferred embodiment of my invention.
A suitable base 2 is provided upon which are supported journals 4 which form bearings for a shaft carrying the pulley 6 and grinding Wheel 8. A shield 10 supported in any suitable way upon the base is preferably provided for the grinding wheel and a water sup Specification of Letters Patent.

plying device comprising a receptacle 12 and a tube 14 arranged to deliver water to the grinding wheel is also provided as is common in this art.
A plate 3 is adjustably mounted for move- 60 ment toward and from the grinding device upon the base 2 and a bolt 5, extending through the plate 3 and a slot, not illustrated, in the base 2 is arranged to secure the plate 3 in different adjustments. Rigidly secured 5 to the plate 3 is a guideway 16 comprising a horizontal plate with a trough-shaped depression 18 intermediate its sides. A flat plate 20 constituting a carrier for tool holders hereinafter described is mounted upon the guideway 16 for sliding movement longi tudinally and transversely thereof and is provided with marginal flanges 22 which project over the sides of said guideway and are spaced a sufficient distance apart to permit the carrier to have a limited sliding movement transversely of the guideway, as clearly shown in the drawing. Two retaining plates 24 are secured to the flanges 22 on the underside of the carrier in order to prevent upward displacement of the carrier. A removable pin 26, extending through the carrier and working in a slot formed in the guideway 16, serves to limit the outward sliding movement of the carrier. A rod 28 having a hand wheel secured on its outer end is mounted for sliding and turning mow-uncut in a groove formed in the bottom of the depression 18 and is provided with an upwardly extending arm 30 which carries a forked member arranged to engage a pin 32 secured in lugs 34 depeni'ling from the carrier and spaced to engage the ends of the forked member.
The blade holders are detachably mounted upon supports 36 arranged upon opposite sides of the grinding device and rigidly secured to the carrier 20, and in the present embodiment of the invention two holders are arranged for use simultaneously to support knives in operative relation with the acting face of the grinding surface.
The blade holders each comprise an inclined base plate 31 having an upwardly extending projection at its lower end for engaging the side of a knife positioned in the holder, and the said projection has a flange arranged to overlap the upper side of said knife, as clearly shown in the drawing. Clamping plates are arranged to hold the knives in engagement with the base plates and are provided with depending shoulders 37 to hold the knives in engagement with the upwardly extending projections on the base plates. The clamping plates 85 are secured for longitudinal adjustment along the base plates by means of milled headed screws which extend through longitudinal slots in said clamping plates into the base plates, and guiding means are provided for maintaining the clamping plates in parallel relationship with the base plates, and this arrangement permits knives of different sizes to be held in the blade holders.
In the operation of the machine, the knives are inserted in suitable position in each holder and the carrier is moved inwardly by means of the hand wheel until the edges of the knives are in engagement with the acting surface of the grinding device, and then by oscillating the hand wheel said edges are moved back and forth over the grindstone and evenly ground to a sharp edge. It will be observed that as the grinding wheel decreases in size through continued wear the plate 3 may be adjusted inwardly upon the base plate 2 so as to bring the carrier and blade holders in suitable proximity to the grinding surface, and with this arrangement the guideway may be made shorter in length than would otherwise be the case, which is advantageous in securing an inexpensive and compact .construction. It will also be seen that the carrier 20 serves to cover the devices provided to support and to impart movement thereto.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A grinding machine, having in combination, a grinding device, a movable carrier for the tools to be ground, a rod mounted for turning and sliding movement, and means carried by said rod for imparting reciprocating movement to said carrier across the acting face of the grinding device and sliding movement to and from operative relation with said acting face.
2. A grinding machine, having in combination, a grinding device, a guideway, a carrier for the tools to be ground mounted upon said guideway for movement longitudinal and transverse thereof, a rod arranged for turning and sliding movement on said guideway, and means carried by said rod arranged to impart reciprocating movement to said carrier across the acting face of said grinding device, said means constructed to impart sliding movement to said carrier to and from operative relation with said acting face.
3. A grinding machine, having in combination, a rotary grinding device, a guideway, a carrier for the tools to be ground mounted for movement upon said guideway, and means for moving said carrier longitudinally and transversely of said grinding device comprising a rod arranged for turning and sliding movement on said guideway, and an arm rigidly secured on said rod and articulated with said carrier.
4. A grinding machine, having in combination, a grinding device and a carrier mounted for movement across the acting face of the grinding device and for sliding movement to and from operative relation with said acting face and blade holders mounted upon the carrier upon opposite sides of the grinding device arranged to present the tools in said holders to the grinding device.
5. A grinding machine, having in combination, a rotary grinding wheel mounted upon a suitable base, a plate mounted on said base for sliding movement in a direction transverse to the aXis of said grinding wheel, a guideway supported upon said plate, a carrier for the tools to be ground mounted upon said guideway for movement longitudinally and transversely thereof, a rod arranged for turning and sliding movement on said guideway, and means carried by said rod arranged to impart reciprocating movement to said carrier across the acting face of said grinding device and sliding movement to and from operative relation with said acting face.
6. A grinding machine, having in combination, a grinding device and a blade holder for supporting a tool in operative relation with said grinding device comprising an inclined base plate having at its lower end an upwardly extending projection for engaging the side of a tool and a flange extending from the said projection arranged to overlap said tool, a clamping plate arranged to hold said tool in engagement with the base plate and provided with a depending flange arranged to hold said tool in engagement with said projection on the base plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. BOND.
