D. C. OAUMINGS, OF FULTON, NEW YORK.
' Leners Patent No. 89,130, dated Alm-z 2o, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'VISES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the came.
To whom it ma/y concern Be it known that I, D. C.- OUMINGS, of Fulton, Os-
wego county, State of New York, have made certain;
new and useful Improvements in Mechanics Vises; and I hereby declare the following to be an exact and full description of the same, refelence being had to the drawings that accompany and form a part of these specifications, in which- Figure l, front elevation.
Figure 2, side elevation.
Figure 3, vertical bisection.
Figure 4, socket or stopl Figure 5, bisectiou of detachable parts.
Figure 6, end View of parts shown in iig. 5.
Figure' 7, spring for keeping the outer jaw in position.
Figure 8, views of adjustable guide.
Figures 9, l0, and l1, views of a plano-cylindrical washer.
Letter A, jaws of the vise.
Letter B, the screws.
Letter C, screw-socket.
Letter D,'step or -base-socket.
Letter E, sliding hinge-block.
Letter F, spring.
Letter g, screw for adjusting the block E.
Letter h, wheel for working the screw g.
Letter i, staple for retaining the end ofthe spring F Letter j, stay or adjustable guide.
Letter k, iiange to stay the vise to the bench.
Letter l, set-screw with which to tighten the foot of the vise.
Letter m, plano-cylindrical washer.
Letter An, a part corresponding to m.
The object of my inveutionis to provide against any undue lateral strain on the screw when the jaws are opened wide, as also to secure a'niore substantial and convenient method of` moving the foot of the outer jaw outwards or inwards to Vsuit the size or form of the material to be clamped.
My device for always keeping the screw B and the socket C in a line, is as follows:
On the socket I make the collar n, with its front face cylindrical, as shown in fig. 3, and in the jaw A a corresponding recess.
I make the washer m of the same form, and in .the jaw A a recess to correspond.
The openings for the screw and socket, through A and A', are elongated vertically at their inner ends.
These provisionsV enable both the screw B and the socket C to rock vertically, so they are always on a line with each other.l
As I cause the collar 'n and the washer m toextend somewhat horizontally on both sides, I secure a brace on each side against the lateral turning or twisting of the jaws, when the piece clamped is at one end onl 4 ne peculiarity of my adjusting-device for the bottom is, in having 'the spring F, which acts upon the jaws A, move with the adjusting or sliding yoke E,
so it may always exert its force uniformly.` The manner of combining the parts to do this, is well set forth in fig. 3. Y
The screw gbeing set in the head of the yoke E, as shown in iig. 5, the turning of the said screw carries the yoke or sliding block E out or in at pleasure.
The wheel h, or other suitable device, may be used to work the screw g. I prefer the wheel, as it may be readily worked by the foot.
If thought more desirable, a rack and pinion may be used to adjust the yoke E.
The guide j is adjusted so as to allow the block E to slide back and forth easily.
The spring F is fastened firmly to the bottom of the jaw A', the other end of it rests in the staple or stirrup t'. This stirrup is drawn up until the force of the spring is suiicient to keep the jaw A' close back against the screw-shoulder.
I do not confine myself to any particular manner of attaching the spring, provided it moves with the yoke.
The step D, with its screw l, is to steady the lower end ofthe machine. The object of this is to provide for benches of different heights, as the standard may extend into the ioor below, if required.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The spring F, when arranged upon and to move with the block E, for the purposes specified.
2. The yoke or block E, when provided with the screw g and wheel h, or their equivalents, when arranged and combined with the base of the two jaws A and A', as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\ D. O. OUMINGS. Witnesses:
D. C. COLBY, C. H. POOLE.
