Description

PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908. S. H. GRAMPTON: CABLE CLIP.
APPLICATION PILEDOOT. 30 1907.

UNITED STATES STEWART H. ORAMPTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CABLE-CLIP.
Application filed October 30, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEWART H. CRAMP- TON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Inventions Relating to Cable-Clips, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the same.
This invention relates to cable clips and relates especially to one piece metallic clips for suspending telephone or similar cables from messenger cables.
In the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of this invention and in which the same reference numeral refers to similar parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a perspective showing the clip in position. Fig. 2 is a similar transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view showin the clip before bein applied to a cable.
.[n the illustrative GITFbOCllIllGllt of this in vention shown in the drawings, the clip may, be formed of a single piece of sheet metal, such as Zinc, aluminum alloy, or other strong ductile flexible material not subject to corrosion under the conditions of use. The head 5 of the clip may be connected with the body 3 by the tapering portion 6 and the head may, if desired, be formed with a suitable transverse slot 9 with which a narrower locking recess 4. communicates at its upper edge. In thisway, the lockingshouldersSareformedand these shoulders may, if desired, be stiffened and reinforced by doubling over and forcing down the material removed from the ends of the slot so as to form doubled reinforced shoul ders at these points. In a similar way the tongue 7 cut from the head in making the locking recess 4 maybe bent up and forced down against the sheet of metal which forms the head so as to form a doubled reinforced abutment at this point. This bending and compression of the sheet metal at the edge of the shoulders and. abutment of course hardens and stiffens the same so as to give a greatly increased strength at this point in resisting tearing. If desired, also, the end 12 of the body or strap 3 of the clip may be similarly stiffened by doubling back the terminal portion upon itself, this being preferably done in such way that the inturned terminal portion comes on the inside of the Specification of Letters Patent.

H curved suspender or hook 14. when the clip l is applied, as is indicated in Fig. 2.
5 These clips may be very readily applied to i a cable by passing the body or strap 3 around the cable 2 and then passing it through the slot 9. The end 12 of the clip is then passed around the messenger cable 1 and brought down through the slot until the proper notches 11 come 0 posite the locking recess into which the reduced neck between these notches slips. The end 15 of the clip is then bent upward around the head so that a hookshaped suspender 14 may be produced, as indicated in Fig. 2. The strap 3 is normally forced into engagement with the shoulders 8 by the weight of the cable, although these parts are shown slightly separated in Fig. 2 for the sake of clearness. In this Way, the suspender is prevented from coming out of the locking slot and a still more reliable suspension is secured. By having a number of locking notches, such as 10, 11, in the strap end the clip may be used with cables of varying size and still have the cable brought u as close to the messenger as may be desire Having described this invention in connection with an illustrative embodiment thereof, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not, of course, to be limited, what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
1. The sheet metal cable clip having a head provided with a slot and doubled reinforced shoulders at the upper edge of said slot formed by doubling over the metal removed from said slot against the metal of the head, there being a locking recess in said head communicating with the upper edge of said slot and provided with a doubled reinby doubling back the metal removed from said recess against the metal of the head, and having connected to said head an integral strap ada ted to pass through said slot and formed w1th a doubled stiffened end and provided with a plurality of locking notches in said doubled end to cooperate with said looking recess.
2. The sheet metal cable cli having a head provided with a slotv and reinforced shoulders at the upper edge of said slot formed by bending over the metal removed forced abutment formed at its upper edge from said slot, there being a locking recess in formed with an end provided with a plurality said head, communicating with the upper of locking notches to cooperate with said edge of said slot and provided with a reinlocking recess.
