Letters Patent No. 88,954,.dated 11 ml 13, 1869.
mPRO'VEMENT IN BUG-G-Y AND WAGON-TOPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the m Tocll whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, GUSTAV Fuons,of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Tops for Buggies, Wagons,.and Similar Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters-indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to tops for buggies, wagons, and similar vehicles, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of thefram'e, by which the top is made adjustable and removable at will.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the manner of constructing and attaching my frame to an ordinary buggy-body, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view, showing its attachment to the seat of the buggy, 8E0.
- The tops of buggies, wagons, and similar vehicles, have usually, heretofore, been so constructed and arranged as not to admit of lateral or longitudinal adjustment, or of convenientremoval and folding up, so as to be carried along without much trouble.
To accomplish this is the object of my invention.
I attach to the lower side of the body A, of a bug gy, or other similar vehicle, and, in front of the rear axle-tree 72, two hollow supports, 1), arranged so as to have their outer ends-flush with the vertical sides of the body, and located so as to be in the line desired for the rear side of the top, as ordinarily used, and as shown in fig. 1.
Into these supports D, I insert theends of the uprights I) and c, which are bent at right angles, for the purpose, and fasten them by set-screws a, all as shown in the same figure.
' The holes, or sockets of the supports, I make of any form suitable to prevent the uprights b and c from turning, when their ends, made in a similar manner, are inserted.
These uprights b and 0 may be only-of sufficient length for the height of the top, or'they may be made so as to form the sides complete of the frame, as shown in section 2.
In the latter case they are formed and shaped and covered as shown in the same figure.
' In the former case, I eitherhinge the pieces d, which form the frame for the upper part of the top, as shown at g,-to the uprights, so as to make an elbow-joint, or
connect them to the uprights by means of a socket, e,
and set-screw f, as shown at c in fig. 1.
When desired, the supports D, for this skeletonframe of the top of a buggy. or other vehicle, may be attached to the seat, as clearly shown in fig. 2, or may be connected to the rear end of the body of the vehicle in a similar manner.
The frame, thus constructed, I cover with any ma-v terial suitable for the purpose, and in such a way that it can be adapted, or suited to the adjustable character of the frame.
In use, whenever it isv desired to widen or narrow the frame, it is only necessary to loosen the set-screws a, move the uprights laterally, and then fasten them again by the screws. I
When the supports are arranged as shown in fig. 1,
.or when it is desired to havethe fiame move longitudinally, the supports can be arranged as in fig. 2.
In either case, the frame can be attached and removed with equal convenience,'and the pieces (1, forming the support for the top cover, can, with equal convenience, be folded up, whether hinged, or connected to the uprights with a socket and set-screw.
The advantages of this frame are, that it can, with its cover, be readily and conveniently attached to or removed from any vehicle provided with suitable sup ports D; that it can be adjusted by moving the uprights in the supports; and that it can be folded so as to be carried without any special trouble or difficulty, and used when desired.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, is-
-A 'frame for tops of buggies, wagons, and similar vehioles, consisting of the uprights b and c, shaped so as to form the entire sides of the frame, or jointed, in combination with the supports D, so as to be adjustae bio and removable, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown'and described.
