IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS-FOR RAISING BEER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 88,927, dated April 13, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. L. TREAT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Forcing Liquids from Close Vessels and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will en able others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tc the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The figure is a detail sectional view of my improved apparatus.
My invention has for its object to furnishv a simple, convenient, and reliable apparatus by means of which beer or other liquids may be forced out of close casks and raised to the desired position by the pressure of atmospheric air; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is an air and water tight reservoir, which should be made of such a strength as to resist the pressure to which it may be exposed.
B is an air-reservoir, connected with the upper end of the reservoir A by a short pipe,
' b', which said pipe is provided with a valve,
C, opening into the air-chamber B, so that it may be opened by the pressure of the air in the reservoir A, and when said pressure is removed may be closed by its own weight or by the outward pressure ofthe air in the air-chamber B.
The air chamber B is provided with any desired number of pipes I), leading from it to the beereasks or other vessels from which the liquid is to be forced, and which pipes should be furnished with stop-cocks d', to prevent the passage ot' air through any or all oi' said pipes when desired.
E is a pipe leading in through the top of the reservoir A, through which air may be admit-ted to said reservoir when necessary.
The pipe E is provided with a stop -cock, F, by the operation of which the air may be adinitted when desired, and which, when closed, will prevent the escape of air through said pipe E. Y
G is a pipe leading in through the lower part of the reservoir A, and which is provided with a two-way cock, H, which, when turned in one direction, allows the water to iiow in through the supply-pipe I, and which, when turned in the other direction, allows the water to flow from the reservoir A through the discharge-pipe J.
K is a pipe leading in through the top of the reservoir A, and in which is placed a rod, L, tting air-tight.
The rod L is held down against the press ure of the air by the coiled spring M, the upper end of which rests against the top bar of the guide-frame N, attached to the top of the reservoir A, and which keeps the rod L in a vertical position.
.The lower end of the spring M rests upon the nut O, placed upon a screw -thread cut upon the rod L, so that the tension of the spring M may be adjusted to sustain any desired pressure.
The amount of pressure which the spring M is adjusted to resist may be indicated by a scale or division-marks upon the frame N.
The stop-cocks F and H are connected with the rod L by the chains P and .Q or other suitable connections, so that when the rod L -is raised the two-way cock H will be operated to close the supply-pipe I and open the discharge-pipe J.
The apparatus is made to do this automatically by connecting a iioat, R, with the rod L, so that when the upward pressure ot' the water is added to the pressure of the air the rod L may be raised.
At the same time that the stop-cock H is shifted, to allow the water to iiow out, the stop-cock F is also opened, to admit airl to take the place of the discharged water.
It' at any time the pressure should be too great, and partially raise the rod L, the air will escape through the small channel Z formed in the said rod L with a whistling sound, so as to give notice to the bar-tender that the apparatus requires attention.
