FASTENER FOR STORM-SASHES, WINDOW-SCREENS, &c.

To all whom 'tt may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN HAUsER, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Storm-Sash, WVindow-Screens, &c.; and'l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

which are hinged at the top to the window casing and are adapted to swing outwardly at the bottom.

The object of the invention is to provide a firm and positive fastening for a storm-sash or window-screen which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction and which shall be convenient to operate.

In the construction of my improved fastener I employ the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is front view of the fastener applied to the inner side margin of a stormsash, 'the same being shown in locked position; Fig. 2 is a side view showing in full lines the storm sash swung outward at the bottom and held in outward position by the fastener bar, and also showing the fastener in locked position in dotted outline, as in Fig. 1.

Referring to the details, 1 indicates the storm-sash, hinged at the top to the window casing (not shown), the bottom being adapted to swing outwardly, the sash when closed contacting with the blind-stop 2 at the window sides. Secured upon the sash at a short distance from its lower margin and close to the side margin is a plate 3 having an angled portion 4 extending outwardly from the sash and provided with an elongated slot 5 adapted to be traversed by a pivot pin 6 in the end of a bar 7, the latter being thus pivotally and slidably connected with the sash. Secured to the side of the window frame is a plate 8 having an angled portion 9 which is slotted at 10 to receive and guide the bar 7. The bar is provided with a notch 11 close to its outer free end adapted to engage the lower Specification of Letters Patent.

' edge of the slot 10 when the bar is in outward position as shown in full lines, Fig. 2. To provide ready means for engaging the bar to operate the same, the,free end is bent angularly at 12 to form a lug. When the sash is in closed position as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and as shown in Fig. 1, the bar 7 contacts near its pivotal connection with the sash, with the angled portion 9 of the plate 8 immediately below and in line with the slot 10. The edge of the bar at 13 close to its free end, is inclined, so that when the bar is in locked position this inclined portion rides upon a projection 14 extending outwardly from the side of the window frame, the projection being preferably an ordinary roundheaded screw, the head of which provides a shouldered portion which holds the free end of the bar from lateral movement when in locked position, accidental disengagement being thereby obviated.

Inlocking the sash, the end of the bar carrying the pivot is moved to its uppermost position in the slot 5, so that the opposite end of the bar in swinging upon the pivot is clear of the projection 14. The bar upon now being lowered will bring the inclined edge 13 in contact with and cause the same to ride upon the projection 14, while the upper portion of the bar adjacent to its pivot will be forced against the angled portion 9 of the plate 8, the pressure upon the portion 9 being increased as the edge 13 advances upon the projection. It is thus seen that the bar serves as a straining lever to maintain the sash in position, the latter when fastened being firmly locked and free from the liability to rattle.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fastener for swinging sash comprising a bar pivotally and slidably connected at one end with the sash, a projection upon the side of the window frame adapted to be engaged by the free end of the bar, and a rigid plate secured upon the window side and adapted to contact with the bar between its ends, substantially as described.

2. A fastener for swinging sash comprising a bar pivotally and slidably connected at one end with the sash and provided with an inclined portion at its opposite free end, a projection upon the side of the window frame adapted to be engaged by said inclined portion, and a plate upon the side of the window frame ada ted to contact with the bar near its pivotal connection with the sash, substantially as described.

3. A fastener for swinging sash comprising a plate secured u on the sash and provided with an elongate slot, a bar having a pivot pin at one end adapted to traverse said slot, a slotted contact plate adapted to guide the bar and hold the same from outward movement when in locked position, the bar provided with a notch in one edge. adjacent to its free end to engage the contact plate and having the opposite edge adjacent to its free end inclined, and a projection upon the side 15 of the window frame adapted to be engaged by the inclined edge of the ,bar, substantially as described.
