Description

5mm: @anni @tibia CHARLES A. BOGERT, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN Letters Patent No. 88,839, dated April 13, 1869'.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-SHARPEERS.
The Schedule referred to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
y Be it knownthat I, CHARLES A. BoGER'r, of Bay City, in the county of Bay, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Implement for nSharpening Knives and other like edge-tools or implements; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of one side, and Figure 2, a like perspective View ofthe reverse side. The mode of construction is as follows: First, a piece of steel, capable of bearing a high degree of temper, and of a suitable thickness, is out out, of such size and shape as may be desired, having reference tothe size of the sharpener to be made.
Second, an opening is then drilled or punched through the piece of steel, at a convenient distance from the `,end or edge of thesame, as represented by the drawiings, Nos. l and 2, accompanying this application.
Third, from this opening to the enda or edge of the piece of steel, a cut is made in the shape of a double V,`and so bevelled as to be open on one side, and, after being made perfectly smooth and sharp on the other side, itis brought together, so that the sharp edges, or
jaws. of the V, are closed up or slightly lapped at the bottom, and as far up from the bottom as may be desired.
Fourth, it is then tempered to such a degree of hardness that the sharp edges are capable of smoothly cutting away or shaving off the sides of a blade vof a knife, or other tool or implement, which it may be desirable to sharpen, in such a manner as to produce a sharp edge. v v y Fifth, the cutting part of the V maybe formed of jewels, rmly fixed or setln the-.steel or other metal, of which the body of the instrument is composed, the form and shape as above lbeing retained.
Sixth, the mode of using this Sharpener is by placing the edge of the knife or other implement to be sharpened in the opening, and drawing it through the V, from the closed toward the open side tl'iereof.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe knife-Sharpener, constructed as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
y CHARLES A.v BOGERT.
