To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL .W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Im roved Chute, of which the following is a ful clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to chutes, and more particularly to chutes for coal or other broken or ranul-ar material.
object 'of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and light chute adapted to be arran ed at an openin in a wall and havin a tilting hopper for directing the matoria l through the opening and serving as a closure for the opening when the hopper is in an 1noperative position.
A further object of the invention is to provide. a chute for-directing broken and granular material such as coal through anopening in a wall, and having a guard for preventing the marring of the wall by the passing material when the chute is in use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be'more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

The tilting hopper is mounted to swing upon the lower side of the frame 5 and comrises side walls 9 and a bottom 10 formed rom a single piece of sheet metal or other similar material. -The brackets are secured to the guard by means of rivets 36. The brackets are extended across the apron and reinforce the same. When the hopper is in the inoperative position, closing the opening in the wall, the guard is arranged between the side walls with the edge adjacent to the bottom 10 of the hopper; When the hopper is swung or tilted outward into the operative position, r the guard is swung upward agamst the wall and protects the wall from marring or injury due to the materialpassing rapidly through the'chute. The guard can be swung upward against the wall of the building by hand without di culty, arecess 37 at the edge per mitting the hand of the operator to be inserted underthe edge.
The top of he casing atthe under side carries a; spring latch 38, mounted upon the casing by means of rivets 39, and projecting frame 5. The latch at the projecting end'has outwardly through an opening t0 in the passing over the same and to engage at theshoulder 41 to be held firmly in position thereby. A pad-lock 46 can be arranged in i I the opening 42 of the latch when the hopper is in the inoperative position, to lock the closure 'in position at --the o ening, and thereby to prevent unauthorize entrance to the building throu h the opening in the wall. The end of the soc et 43 op osite the open ing 45 terminates in a hand e 47, by means of whichthe hopper'canbe easily manipulated.
The lower edge of the bottom10 of the ho per extends inwardly beyond the lower si e of. the frame, thereby turning the material from the edge and preventing the gathering 1 of a quantity of the material which won hinder the operation of the ho per. Furthermore, the arrangement'of t e apron 4 and the'bottom 10 is such,-that the angular- 1ty thereof when the chute is in operation assess prevents any of the material from collecting in and choking the chute when the latter is in use. When the hopper is swung into the closed position, the guard will be forced into engagement with the catch or adjacent portions oi the frame, and will thereby be automatically sw ung into position between the sides of the hopper as the latter is closed.

side walls of the hopper permit certain resilient .play of the apron when it is oper ated, whereby is avoided any possibility of the jamming or binding of the latter.
As I provide plurality of openings 29 in the side walls 9 or the hopper, it is possible to mount the guard 32- adjustably to make allowance for the form and construction of the wall against which the guard rests when in an operative position. 7
It will be understood that the wall adjacent to the coal chute may be provided with a projecting flange or corn-ice or other pro jection, which would interfere with the guard if the latter were hinged to the side walls at points close to thewall.- By means of the openings 29 however, andthe pivot bolt 30, it is possible to arrange the guard in position so that it will clear the projection of the wall when swung intothe upward position against the same when the hopper is, tilted outward. i

In a chute, a casing adapted to be mounted at an openingin a wall and having a frame arranged at the edges of the opening, a tilting hopper mounted to swing upon said frame and com rising a bottom and sides integral therewith, a transverse member car ried by said sides limit the outward movement ofsaid hopper, said sides having a plurality of openings, bolts adapted to be removably mounted in said openings of said sides, brackets mounted upon said bolts, springs upon said bolts be tween said sidesand said brackets, and a guard carried rigidly by said brackets and arranged to be swung into position to protect the wall when the hopper is open, said brackets being extended to reinforce said guard.
