MOP WRINGER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 15,1907.
\ WITNESSES: /Z INVENTOI? Mow 4 H: JZOCMQ/fi/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN H. SHOEMAKER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO WILLIAM I. EWART, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
MOP-WRINGER.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MopWVringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has reference to new and useful improvements in that class of mopwringers which are adapted to be secured to a pail and operate through resistantly engaging the mop while the latter is being turned.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be of simple and inexpensive construction, and which is capable of being employed to sufficiently wring out a mop with but little exertion on the part of the operator.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a pail provided with my improved mopwringer; Fig, 2, a vertical cross sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, a like view to Fig. 2, but at right angles therefrom; and Fig. 4, a
perspective view of the invention together with a person shown wringing out a mop therewith.
The invention comprises a piece of strong wire which is bent or formed to provide a pair of centrally disposed contiguous loops 5 and 6. The former of these loops", which are of substantially semicircular shape, is arranged to be in approximately the same plane with the top edge 7 of the pail 7 with which the invention is to be employed. The other 100 6 is inclined at a slight angle from a vertical plane curves downward and then extends at an inclination upward to the edge of the pail and is a continuation of one extremity 5 of the loop 5, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. From the other extremity 5 of the loop 5 the wire is continued in an outwardly extending curved direction, as at 8, to pass over the rim of the pail and in proximity to the bail-ear 9.
The end of the loop 6 is extended, as at 6, in a diagonal direction to and over the rim of the pail and in close relation to the other bail-ear 9.

they are bent, as at 10, to provide downwardly directed arms 11 at o posite sides of the pail 7 which are prolongec to the bottom of the pail and then bent to form two outwardly protruding foot-pieces 12, which may be advantageously curved to furnish an extended tread for the operator's feet.
The afore described bent wire constitutes the wringer and is secured to the bail, as by wire coupling links 13 extending around the bail ears 9-9 and the body wire at the bends 10. The downwardly directed arms 11 are inclined rearwardly from the perpendicular as clearly seen by the dotted lines showing one of these arms 11 in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and secured in such position by a wire 14 encircling the pail in proximity of its bottom and reliably attached to the lower ends of said arms.
The wire from which the wringer is constructed is of such size and character as to withstand any strain to which it is subjected without becoming distorted.
The manner of operating the invention is as followsThe mop is inserted into the pail and drawn to bear against the concave side of the wringer portion 8 and thereby guided into the loop 5. The mop is then raised until but about two inches thereof is below the level of this loop, whereupon and by rotating the mop-stick while in an upright position, the mop ends are brought by the part 8 into the loop 6 whereby sufficient resistance is offered to the further turning of the mop to cause the latter being twisted to such an extent as to squeeze the water therefrom and thus accomplish the purpose of the invention.
In practice the operator would desirably stand nearly erect with her feet pressing down upon the foot-pieces, 12. With the pail arranged to have the curved portion 8' furthest away, as shown in Fig. 4, and the foot-pieces, by reason of the inclination given the arms 11, within easy reach of her feet, opportunity is afforded for manipulating the mop Without danger of her skirts coming into contact withv the same. By this arrangement a very simple and inexpensive device is produced which operates effectually for the purposes described.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is
1. In combination with a pail, of a piece of wire having intermediate its length a curved portion terminating in a substantially horizontal loop which joins a downwardly extending loop and from the'latter the wire is continued diagonally upwards, the ends of said wire being turned downwardly and secured to the pail in proximity of its bottom.
2. In combination with a pail including spaced bail ears and a bail connected at the ends in said ears, of a mop wringer consisting of a single piece of wire having a curved intermediate portion terminating in a substantially horizontal loop and. continued downwardly from the latter and then diagonally upward with the extremities of said wire turned downwardly alongside the pail and secured thereto in proximity to its bottom,
and coupling links extending around said bail ears and around the portions of the wire adjacent thereto.
3. In combination with a pail, of a piece of wire having intermediate its length a curved portion terminating in a substantially horizontal loop which joins a downwardly ex tending loop and from the latter the wire is continued diagonally upwards, the ends of said wire being extended downwardly externally of the pail in diagonal directions and terminating in outwardly extending footpieces, and means for securing said wire to the top and bottom of the pail.
4. In combination with a pail, of a mop wringer secured thereto and comprised of a single piece of wire formed with two centrally disposed loops which are arranged in different planes and between the opposite sides of the pail rim, said wire being extended down externally of the pail in diagonal directions and terminating in outwardly extending footpieces.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
