Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. SPRAGUE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange, in'the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts have in-v vented an Improvement in Qhildrens Garments, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying draw-' ing, is a specication, like let-ters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to one-piece childrens garments, such as are commonly known as play suits. These garments comprise a waist 'portion and a trousers or pants portion which are connected together, and heretofore they have always been made with the waist portion opening dounthe back and with t-he pants portion'provided in the back with a flap which could be buttoned to t-he waist portion. The making of the waist portion with the opening in the back necessitates dividing the collar in the back, and in order that the collar may have the make-the collar in two pieces, so as to produce the desired separated ilaps at the frontthereof. Moreover, where the waist opens' in the back, itis not onlr diHicult for a. child to dress itself, but a suit tlhus constructed does not give the appearance of a shirt-waist suit.

One of the objects of my present invention is to provide a novel play-suit wherein the waist opens in the front, instead lof in the back, and the advantage ot' this construction is that the vcollar can be made invone piece, as in an ordinary shirt-waist suit, and when on, the waist portion of the suit has all the appearance of a shirtewaist and is much more. dressy than the ordinary play suit where the waist portion opens in the back. I' have also embodied in this invention a novel construction of lining for the purpose of blousing the waist, which liningis made shortened to it the child who is wearing it. The open front ot' the .garment is provided with the usual buttons and buttonholes 9 and 10 by which it may be buttoned,

which is sewed to the neck ot' the garment at 13, and is also sewed to the waist-band thereof at 17. This lining member, however, is free and unattached from the Waist portion A at other parts.

The lining is made shorter than the materialof thewaist portion so that the weight of the trousers is sustained bythe lining, and the waistl will blouse, as shown in Figs.' 1 and 2. 'i'iis securing of the desired blouse effect by means of the lining has the advantage that the weight of the garment'is evenly distributed on the shoulders of the wearer, and all necessity for straps or tapes for securing the blouse eii'ect are avoided.

l prefer to make the lining extensible so that the garment may be readily made to it children of different sizes. As one. simple way of securing this end, I provide t-he lining with a tuck 15 which extends horizontally around the latter' from one edge ofthe ,opening 6 to the other. If it is found that the lco i lining is .too short, so that the garment is tooy short waisted, the tuck 15 may be let out and a smaller tuck taken, or said tuck may be completely let out, as desired, thus lengthening the waist of the garment.` 'With suoli an arrangement of lining it is possible to adapt the garment-to a rapidly growing child in a way which'is not possible with play suits as ordinarily made v When a garment having the features above described is on a child, ,the waist has all the appearance of a shirt-waist, and the garment is thus a much more desirable one than a play suit in which the waist buttons up inthe back. A suit embodying my invention' thus has many advantages over the ordinary play suit, some of which areennmerated above.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent iszy 1.' A childs outer garment comprising a connected Waist portion and trouser portion, said waist portion being provided with a waist band and being open 'from the neck to v the waist band, and the trouser portion also being open at the iront from the waist band to a point below the latter, said waist portion having a lining. which. is secured thereto atthe neck and at the walst band but 1s free therefrom. at other points, and said trouser portion having arear iiap adapted to button onto the rear of the waist portion.
