BABY-BED.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. LINDSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Petersburg, in the county of Hillsboro and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds or cribs of that type which are intended to be attached to the frame of an ordinary bed and to be readily detached therefrom during the day and set aside so as not to obstruct the way when the device is not needed.

Among the special objects aimed at in the present invention are to construct a bed of this type which may be easily and cheaply manufactured; assembled and disassembled with facility, and which may be adjusted to t any height or construction of bed rail.

The above and other objects are attained by the construction hereinafter disclosed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichz* Figure 1 is a general perspective view illustrating the relation of my improved baby bed to an ordinary type of iron bedstead. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view just above the plane of the bed bottom, and showing said bottom and its supporting means in plan. Fig. 3 is an end elevation with certain details in section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the socket members.

In all the views of the drawings similar parts are indicated by like reference characters.

In the embodiment of the invention set forth herein my improved bed A is shown as .attached to an ordinary form of bed B. The

bed A comprises two end pieces 10, each of which is secured by means of a clamp 11 to the bed rail b; a back 12 is provided with legs 13, and a bottom 14. The end pieces 10 are made exactly alike and each comprises a` rigid frame 15 of any suitable form in general outline. At the upper outer corner is formed a hook 16 which projects outwardly and downwardly in the plane of the end piece. At the lower outer corner is a point 17 which projects outwardly substantially in alinement with the lower rail of the frame. The inner end of the frame is adapted to clamp the bed rail b, and is formed preferably with a hook or projection 18 which embraces the Specification of Letters Patent.

in general outline but herein indicated as Y rectangular, and is provided at the upper corners thereof with downwardly extending loops 21. At the lower corners of the back are provided socket members 22 and 22. These .socket members receive the vertical and horizontal portions of the frame in any suitable manner known to the art. These members 22 and 22 are made rights and lefts, but otherwise are alike and a specific description of one will be understood as being applicable to both. The function of the socket members is threefold,-to receive and secure the frame pieces, to adjustably receive and hold the4 legs 13, and to constitute locking means whereby the main parts of the bed are secured together and the bed bottom 14 is supported. The vertical or sleeve portion 23 receives the upper end 24 of the leg 13 and said portion 24 of the leg is provid ed with a series of holes or notches 25 adapted to register with a hole 26 near the bottom of the said sleeve. Each socket member is further provided with a lateral hub 27 to which or in which is secured the horizontal bar 12 of the back. Adjacent to thishub 27 and the inner face of the socket member is provided a notched lug 28.

The bed bottom 14 is or may be of any suitable material but I have found in practice that the most suitable material is a strong fabric such as heavy ticking or duck and which may be washed if desired. The fabric 29 is provided on its ends with suitable springs I30 which constitute an elastic support for the same, and also means whereby the fabric may be readily attached to or detached from the other parts of the structure. As a main supporting means for the fabric I provide rods 31 of peculiar form and which lie adjacent to and parallel with the end pieces 10. Each of these rods 31 is provided with a hook 32 at its inner end and a head 33 at its outer end, and the spring connections at the ends of the fabric are slipped upon the rods 31.

Having thus set forth the specific construction of the several parts, the mode of operation of the same will be apparent. The jaw member 11 of the clamp 11 is first adjusted in accordance with the size or construction of the bed rail b. The end pieces are then clamped to the said rail at the proper or predetermined distance a art. The back 12 is then slipped in place wit the loops 21 into interlocked engagement with the hooks 16 bringing the socket members into place with the points 17 projecting through the holes 26 and into the proper notch 25 of the legs' 13 according to the height desired. The bed bottom 14 is then put into place by hooking the rods 31 into the seats 20 and the heads 33 being brought into engagement with the lugs 28. It will thus be seen that the headed rods 31 constitute means whereby the back is positively locked in engagement with the end pieces andv furthermore whereby the interlocking means hold the legs 13 in adjusted position. As many spring hooks 30 as may bedesired may be employed to secure the side edges of the fabric 29 to the bottom rail 12 of the back and the bar 34 detachably connected to any suitable parts of the structure, such as the members 11.

It will be appreciated that the baby bed herein described may be attached to either side of the bed B and at any place on the side, but preferably adjacent to the head of the bed B. The size of the bed A will be ample for its purpose and yet leaving fully one-half of the side of the bed B free for the movements of the mother as occasion may require. It being well understood that a small infant demands attention at frequent intervals during the night, the many advantages of the present invention will be obvious. The height of the sides and back thereof may be determined according to the desire of the manufacturer or user. The framework of the several parts will be made of structural rod iron preferably, such material being cheap and easily formed as desired, even with some ornamentation. The ends and back should be provided with lattice Work of any suitable character.

It will be understood that the specific construction of the foregoing baby bed may be varied in numerous minor particulars, according to the materials from which the same may be made, without de artin from the spirit of the invention, and c efine in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is z 1. The herein described baby bed comprising, in combination, end ieces for attachment to a bed rail, a back, egs bodily adjustable as to length relatively to the back, and means serving both to interlock the back to the end pieces and to hold the legs in any p0- sition of adjustment.

2. A baby bed comprising, in combination, end pieces including means to secure the same to a bed rail, a back including socket members at its lower corners, legs adjustably connected with the socket members, rigid means on the end pieces to engage the back and legs, and rods cooperating with the end pieces and socket members to secure the several parts together and the legs in adjusted position.

3. A baby bed comprising, in combination, end pieces having hooks at their upper outer corners and outwardly projecting points at their lower outer corners, a back having loops at its upper corners to receive said hooks and having socket members at its lower corners to receive said points, legs received in said socket members and entered by said points,

and means cooperating with the end pieces and socket members to interlock all said parts in assembled position.

4. The combination of end pieces, a back, said end pieces and back having connecting means, and the back including socket members having engagement lugs, and a bed bottom comprising supporting rods to embrace the end pieces and lugs aforesaid.

5. The combination of end pieces, a back, adjustable legs, and a bed bottom comprising a fabric, supporting rods, and detachable connections between said fabric and rods, said rods constituting positive means whereby the back is secured to the end pieces and the legs are held in adjusted position.

6. The combination of end pieces, having outwardly projecting points, a back including socket members to receive said points, adjustable legs in said socket members and also receiving said points, and a bed bottom comprising a fabric, supporting rods, and springs connected to the ends of the fabric and embracing said rods, the rods being hooked at one end to engage the end pieces and headed at the other to engage the socket members, substantially as described.
