Description

P ATENTED MAR. 31, 1908. W. SMITH & J. H. KLASSBN.
VEHICLE SPRING. APPLIGATION FILED FEB. 13 1901.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
' WILLIAM SMITH AND JACOB H. KLASSEN,'OF LOS ANGIELES, CALIFORNIA.
snow-s ams.
' Specificationoi Letters Patent. Patented March 31, 1908.
Application filed February is, 1907. Serial No. 357,170.
To all wllom it may eo'ncem:
Be. it known that we, WILri'I M II. SMITH end JACOB n. Russet, both citizens f the United States, residing at Los-Angeles, inthe county of Los Angeles and Stsite of California, have invented new and useful Im rove- 1 ments in VehiclesSprings, of which the. ollowwith.
hole through the ing is a specification. The objects of I aim invention are to novidc evehicle spring in which the-usual olt leaves thereof is dispensed This hole, made in the leaves for the essage of a'bolt .therethroughto hold the eaves in place in th'e'conventionel spring now used on vehicles: It renders the spring week at this point and causes it to breek'at this point.
.1s a plsnlview of the some. Fig. 8-is an elevation of the vehicle spring, the center thereof being shown in vertical section. Fig. 4'is a perspective viewof the leaf holding clip.
' 1 Inthe drawings 5 represents the leevesoif the spring, on the end of which ereu turned.-
lugs 6 of usual construction to hold t e ends from lateral. movement. These leaves are provided in their center with an oil set portion 7' to'prevent the longitudinel movement offthe leaves of the sprin as between them- "selves, thereibeing no loo t through the center of these leaves to ho. d them in place. To
i hold the leaves in contact one with. the other 'at the center thereof, we have provided the r ing holding clipfi, 'coi'nprising an upper and lower member 9 and 10 res ectively. The lower member is provided wit 1 a screw threaded socket 11 for the insertion therein of the screw threaded holding bolt 12, which when screwed into place in the lower member will project below the same, the projecting end adapted to enter a socket in the spring holding plate 13. The lower member has upturned screw threaded ends 14 adapted to hold the cap 9 ofthe clip firmly in con .tect with the oil set portion 7 of the spring. By this erren ement it will be seen that the center of the eaf of the spring is not weakened by theusuel bolt hole therein and the leaves are detachably held in place while the ends of the various leaves have a sliding contact with the companion leaves, giving the spring ell the advantages of the ordinary spring with the eleinent'ol weakness in the center thereof removed.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent s:-
' In a; vehicle spring, a leaf securing clip,
comprising anupper and. at lower member, the ower -Ine1nber provided with an outwardly progectlng lug adapted to enter the spring holding plate, in combination with a spring having a plurality of leaves, leevesbeing provided withen off set portion. .In' witness .thatwe claim the foregoing we have hereunto subscribed our names this 6th day of February, 1907. v I WILLIAM H. SMITH. JACOB II. KLAJSSEN.
