Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Inch 31; 1908;
Application filed larch 22, 1906. Serial No. 807,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY T. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, cit county, and
State of New York, have ma e certain new and useful Improvements in Terminal Connectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is the provision of a device by means of which a terminal of an electric conductor may be readily and- Figs. 2 and 3 are face views of a modified form of binding nut and washer respectively; Fig. 4 is a plan view of in improved connector; Fig. 5 is a sectiona view thereof on the line 55 (Fig. 4); Fig. 6 is a plan view of the connector showing a circuit wire secured thereto; Fig. 7 is a sectional view thereof on the line 7 7 (Fig. 6), and Fig. 8 is a view showing a modified construction.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate like parts in all the views.
The drawings, for the sake of clearness,
' are made on a somewhat enlarged scale; but
as will be understood the size of the. connector may be varied to suit different conditions of use.
The connector is preferably constructed of flexible sheet metal such as soft copper, and
consists of a plate or disk A provided as shown with a central aperture 0. (intended to fit over a binding }post or other similar. con, tact member) an aving a'plurality of arms B which are preferably integral with the plate and extend radially beyond the edges thereof. The arms B are offset from the plate at some distance inside the edge thereof so as to form a recess C between the arms and the surface of the plate in which the terminal of a'fiexible conductor D may be placed and drawn tightly against the offset portions]; of
the arms B. V\ en thus in place the ends of the arms B are bent around the conductor D as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The conductor is thus readily attached to the connector and'a secure and extended metallic contact between the two is provided.
The connector with the conductor attached is then placed over the binding post E carried by the battery carbon F,andthe binding nut G is screwed down, clamping the connector against the washer H and pressing the arts tightly and securely together.
I liave for the sake of brevity and clearness limited the foregoin description to the use of my invention on t e carbon electrode of a battery, but it is not to be understood that m invention is to be limited to that particu ar urpose since it may be used as a connector f dr all kinds ofelectrical apparatus and devices. p
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated an ordinary form of contact members employed on many kinds of electrical apparatus; but I prefer to use In connector 1n combination with the specia form of bindin nut, shown in Fi s. 2 and 8', in which the c amping surface 0 the nut is indented as by formngg it with the proections or serrations g.
inding nut, when it is screwed home, the
ith this form of M p bent arms B will be forced into the depres- Since a conductor may be securely at-.
tached to the connector before the latter is placed in position, my invention makes it possible to connect up batteries and other apparatus with great facility and with the certainty of securing erfect contacts even where the location 0 the apparatus is such that observation of the connections is difficult or impossible. nector may be readily remove. from the conducting wire, the permanenc of their connection permits batteries whic have become exhausted, or other ap aratus, to be replaced and reconnected wit a minimum amount of labor.
Having thus shown and described my invention, what I claim as new-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A terminal connector comprising an a ertured plate, and flexible inte ral arms 0 set from the plate and exteniling out- And .althou h the con wardly from the aperture on opposite sides thereof, terminal seats formed by the offsets- ,of the arms, said plate having portions projecting beyond the seats and saidarms bein adapted to be bent over the terminal to 1101 v the terminal a ainst theseats and the project ing portions 0 the late.
2. The combination with a contact memher, of a conductor terminal, an apertured ing indentations on its clamping surface which engage the bent arms of the plate.
' 3. The combination with a contact member, of an apertured plate provided with flexibie projecting 'arms, cfl set therefrom, and with portions intermediate the arms which project beyond the oflsets, and a conductor terminal held by the arms between said intermediate ortions and said arms.
