CULTIVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Application led January 15, 1907. Serial No. 352,442.
T o all y07mm it may concern:
BeA it known that I, WILLIAM L. PAU., a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State 'of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full7 clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cultivators, an object of the invention being to provide improvements upon the structure disclosed in Patent No. 836,779 grant-ed November 27th, 1906.
A further object is to provide an im )rove'd implement' supporting frame, pivotally connected with a pole, and movable angularly relative to the pole by means of the pivoted seat bar.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and ar.
rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in side ele'- vation thereof, and Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary plan and side views illustrating a. modification.
1re resents an arch axle having stubs at its endps supported in the hubs of traction A bracket 3 is supported centrally on the arch axle 1 and a double seat bar 4 extending long {itudinall}v of the frame; and Straddling the bracket 3, is pivotally conw nected thereto between the ends of the seat bar, by a pivot pin 5 rejecting through both members of the seat ar and1 through lugs 6 on the bracket. A drivers seat 7 is secured on the rear end of the seat bar and the forward ends of the double seat bar are disa slotted bracket. S on the rear end of pole 9, and a couplingT pin 10 is supported in alined openings in the ends of double bar 4 and carries a sleeve 11 lo cated in the slot or bracket 8.
An arch 12 has rotary mounting centrally 1n a sleeve 1 a vertical pin 14 pivotally secured in a bearing in pole 9, and the beams 15 of furrow i openers 16 are secured to brackets 17 clamped 3 and the latter 1s provided withon bearing sleeves 1S located on the ends of j thc arch 12.'
j .i frame 19 is secured centrally to bracket j 3 and to bearing collars 20 on axle arch 1 and i projects forward and is secured to op osite straddling the po e and therewith by a pivot pivot-ally connect l s1des of a coupling 21 l pivotally connected vpin 22. Fore hounds 23 the collars 2() with the brackets and project j forwardly beyond'the latter. A cross bar 24 pivotally secured between its ends to pole 9V is provided at its ends with depending pivotally secured links 25 connected by rods 26 with the forward ends of hounds 23. A notched segment 27 is secured to frame 19, and a lever 28 is pivotallv secured to the segment and'connected at one end by' a chain 29 with the furrow opening gang to elevate the latter when the lever is swung, and a spring-pressed detent 30 is provided on the lever to lock with the segment and secure the lever at various adjustments, and a lever may be provided for each gang or a single lever may operate all `the gangs, as may be desired. ars 31 connect the forward I of frame. 19 with the axle stubs to compe the l axle to shift with the frame, and stirrups or foot rests 32 are provided on the furrow opening gangs to receive the feet of the opl erator on the seat. Y
The operation is as follows :-When presj s'urn is applied on the right stirrup,y the seat I bar will be moved to the left, swinglng the j inner end of the polel to the right and through l the medium of the several links and hounds, j change the angle of the axle, front arch -and i frame and dispose the furrow opening gangs j atan angle to the line of draft as represented by thev position of the pole. l In the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the forward arch is supported at its ends in bearings 83 at the lower ends of depending rods 34 pivotally connected at their upper ends to a cross bar 35, and the arch I between its ends is located in a bifurcated I bracket 36v pivotally secured to the pole by a pin 37 and a rod 38 connects the pin 37 with 'a crank arm 39 on the arch compelling the bracket and arch to swing together.
art.
Other changes might be made in the gendetails set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described' my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters. Patent is i 1. In a cultivator the combination with a frameand a pole having a pivotal mounting thereon, and a seat bar pivotally connected between its ends to the frame and a pivotal connection between the forward end of the seat bar and the rear end of the' pole.
2. In a cultivator, the combination with an arch axle, of a frame thereon, a pole pivotally connected to the frame, a front arch,v
connections between said front arch and frame, furrow openers connected with the front arch, and a Seat bar pivotally connected with the frame and having pivotal connection with the ivoted pole to move the frame angularly to t e pole.
3. Ina cultivato'r, the combination with an axle, of a frame thereon, a pole pivotally connected to the frame, a front arch, hounds privotall connecting Vthe front arch and ame, rroW opening gangs connected to the front arch and carrying foot rests or stirrups, a seat bar pivotally secured to the frame between its ends and pivotally con-J nected at its forward end to the end of the pole, to swing the frame angularly to the pole.
4. In a cultivator, the combination with an axle, of a frame thereon, a pole pivotally connected with the frame, a f ront arch, hounds pivotally connecting the front arch and frame, furrow opening gangs connected with the front arch, a seat bar pivotally attached to the frame between its ends and pivotally connected at its forward end with the end of the ole.
5. An agricu tural implement comprising a wheeled frame, a pole pivotally connected forwardly of its rear end with said frame, a seat bar pivotally connected between its ends with the frame and pivotally connected with the pole,l a front arch connected with the frame, a connection between said front arch andthe pivoted ole, and furrow openers connected with said front arch.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM L. PAUL.
