Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 17, 1908.
Application filed November 28, 1906. Serial No. 345,543.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoRo Scnonnxnn, manufacturer, subject of the German Emperor, residing at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Compasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to those compasses in which the clamping fast of the attachments in the socket of the compass leg is operated by means of a spring. In such compasses the attaclnnent is usually secured against turning by means of a special device, for instance, a projection or the like formed on the attachment engaging in a slot in the socket. As compared with this arrangement the object of the present invention represents a simplification inasmuch as the clamping spring also serves for securing the position of the attachment. This is attained by a pcculiar shape and arrangement of the spring, by means of which it curves inward through a slot in the socket and presses on the pin of the attachment, while a protuberance formed in the spring engages in the slot ol the insertion.
One form of construction of a suitable means of securing the insertion in compasses, is shown as an example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section; Fig. 2, an elevation of the holder or socket; and Fig. 3, a cross section on the line A-B of Fig. 1.

The bulge c enters the slot 0 and prevents any turning movement of the attachment, while the parts of the spring on both sides of the bulge bear firmly on the edges formed by the slot in the attachment, and hold the latter iirmly.
I declare that what I claim is:
A compass having a socket on one of its legs, said socket having a slot therein, a plate-spring on the leg extending into the slot and into which a boss is pressed, so that a nipple is created and an attaclnnent having a slot therein with which the nipple engages, so that the attachment when being introduced into the socket is guid Ed by the nipple and insured against turning.
