Patented ne-arch 3,
Application filed April raiser. sir-m1 in. stasis.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jesse T. Gimme, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bement, in the county of Flatt and tate of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to aerial toys, and has for its principal object to providea device of simple constrnctionlcywhich a bladed fan may be revolved at rapid rate of speed and allowed to soar in the air.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel construction of fan operating and releasing ineans.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the in vention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may he made Without departing from the spirit or, sacrificing any of thead vantages of the invention.
in the accompanying drawings-Figure i is a perspective view, partly in section oi'a toy constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the fan. carrier detached.
Similar numerals of reference are emplcyed to indicate corresponding parts ,liroughcut the several ofthe drawings.
in carrying out the invention, the handle is formed of Wood or metal, and of such size as to be conveniently grasped in one hand. The handle is bored out from one end in order to receive a spindle l5 and a helical spring 16, one end of the spring being extended downward and entering a receiving or locking recess that is formed in thehandle,
whilethe opposite end of the spring passes through an opening formed in the spindle. At the upper end of the spindle is arranged a cylindrical head 20, and Below this head is a ratchet Wheel 21 that is within the bore of the handle. This ratchet Wheel is en aged by a releasing trigger or pawl 22 pivoted on a stud 23, and provided with a finger piece 24 which is arranged in convenient position to be depressed by the thumb or finger of the operator. The trigger orlpawl is normally Wheel 55 held in engagement with the ratchet by a suitable spring 25 disposed a under the finger piece 24.
The fan may he formed or" aluminium or other light sheet metal, and preferably is provided With two blades or vanes, the fan are arranged openings 3-1 that receive p ns projecting from head 20, it being stood that the l: ed in a osite to tate, this i0 i the to disengage u the unwinding movement of the W ll as to prevent ury to the as V J 11 case the trigger should be the Winding opera on. ractice, the head is grasped in one and the handle in the other, and either or both are turned for the purpose of placing the wring under. stress. As spruig is d, the teeth of the ratchet heel will nder the trigger or paWi and the Will be locked Wound position. if this Winding operation e tri ger be r ieased and the head rcvo ved the nclination of the as is such so they Will slide over the trend Without ahrading the sk n.
The fan is placed in position on the pins and then'the operator grasping the handle may "oint the fan in any direct: n, and'hy siinp e pressure onthe trigger, releasethe spring, so that the spindle Will be rapidly a; rd this movement transmitted revoived,
' ll cause tne latter to rise and -airn: cornoinaticn, Low handle, revolundie oosely our the handle, the need heing with the spindle, a helical Q around lower portion of the soindie and connected at'or e to the spindle, and at the opposite one. o the hanrile, said spring serving as a sp' idle rotating means, and, also, acting to form a connection hetween the spindle and thenandie, the oer portion of the periphery oi the spindle Leing shaped to form a ratchet Wheel, the to protected the upper portion of the heny mounted trigger arranged in candle and one end enspring WOUIB.
l of such ratchet Wheel being a slot in the eeefiee gaging the ratchet Wheel, a spring engaging in testimony that I claim the foregoing as the opposite end of the trigger and. tending my own, I have hereto affixed my signature to hard me miter m operatwe pesltlon, a palr 1n the presence of Wm WItHGSSES,
of pins carried by the head and inclined in a J TEMPLE CURTIS. direction opposrue that m WhUh the head 1s 1 Wltnessesz to rotate and. imvmg err of epenmge REBEOGA M" CLARK,
