UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE M. LYMAN, OF UTICA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL HEATER COMPANY, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
UNIVERSAL CHECK-DRAFT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed October 8. 1906- Serial N0. 337875- T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. LY- MAN, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Check-Drafts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a reversible and universal check draft device for use on smoke flues of furnaces and heaters.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of this device in connection with a dotted outline of the smoke flue and as applied to a vertical or upright flue. Fig. 2 shows the same as applied to a horizontal flue. Fig. 3 shows in perspective from the side the two main parts of the device disconnected and one in connection with a dotted outline of the smoke flue. Fig. 4 shows a top or plan view of the base part in connection with a dotted outline of the smoke flue. Fig. 5 shows the gate section in perspective used in connection with the end of an ordinary sheet iron smoke flue, which is shown in dotted outline.
Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description of the device, 1 indicates the base section which is of tubular form and provided with a flanged and curved face 1 adapted to it against the smoke flue to which it may be secured by rivets or bolts passing through suitable openings in the said flange and the wall of the flue. The main part 1 of the base section is of circular form and projects sufficiently to receive the tubular gate section 2, the latter fitting over the end of the former and being limited in its movement to desired position by the ends of the side flanges 3 and the end abutting against the flange 1' at 4. The gate part 2 is secured to the base part 1 by stove bolts passing through openings a in the gate part and openings 6 and c in the base part. When the base is applied to an upright smoke flue, as shown in Fig. 1, the openings (1 are used in connection with the openings 1) to receive the securing stove bolts, but when the base is used in connection with a horizontal flue, as shown in Fig. 2, the openings aare used in connection with the openings 0 to receive the stove bolts. Additional openings as b and 0 may be provided, whereby any angle of the smoke flue may be provided for while the inclined gate end 5 of the gate section is maintained in suitable downwardly inclined position to receive the gravity closing gate 6 hinged at 7 in ears on the upper side of the gate section 2, and which is adapted to be opened by a wire or cable attached to the ear 8, and of course the gate closes by gravity when not held open. The gate section 2 is likewise adapted to be applied to the open end of a smoke flue, as shown in Fig. 5, the base section being dispensed with. By the arrangement of this device, a reversible and universal check draft is provided, which is adapted to be used under any of the ordinary conditions encountered.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination me. check draft device of a tubular base section having a flanged and grooved base end to fit a flue and having a circular end and stop flanges 33, a tubular gate section having a beveled end and at the other end fitting over the circular end and abutting against said flanges of the base section and rotatably adjustable thereon, a gate hinged to and closing against said beveled end, and means for securing the gate section to the base section in sundry positions of adjustment, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this first day of October 1906.
CLARENCE M. LYMAN.
Witnesses E. S. HESSE, GEO. E. RENDELL.
