g Y V N PETERS PHOTO-l THDGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C mimi' States Are .atent i THOMAS B. STOUT, OEKEYPORT, NEW JERSEY.
Leners Patent No. 87,987, dated Mam 16, 1869.
IMIPROVED HEAD-REST.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THoMAs B. STOUT, in the county of Monmouth, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Portable Head-Rest for Travellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a back view of the head rest.
Figure 2, a side view of the same.
Like letters `designate corresponding parts in both figures'. f v
The object of my invention is ellers, a head-rest, which may be attached to the person, and support the head in a proper position for repose, while sitting or reclining in a seat. It should also be so constructed as to be put in compact form, for convenience in carrying.
T'o accomplish these purposes eiiectually, I employ the fewest and smallest parts practicable, and so conof Keyport,
'nect them as to be folded together.
I make a frame, composed of two upright pieces, A A, to fit on the shoulders of the person, being properly curved to t in place. It is made of thin metallic strips, such as brass, 85o.
These two uprights are connected by a cross-piece, B, which is pivoted to the uprights near their middle.
This pivoting of the parts allows the uprghts to be adjusted to and t the shoulders of different persons, and also allows the parts to be folded together,` for packing, whennot in use.
The cross-piece is made of a strip of metal similar to the uprights. Y
The frame, thus constructed, is attached to the perto produce, for travson by cords, or straps, attached to the ends of the uprights, and passing over the shoulders and around the bod Tlie head-rest C is made, properly, concave, to fit the back of the head, at a proper inclination, or position of repose, and suitably padded. Its shank, c, (also, preferably, of metal, like the frame,) extends down to the cross-piece B, with which it is connected, so as to be supported in au upright position, and also be adjustable up and down easily by the wearer, without removing it.
The method of' connecting the rest, and adjusting it, as represented, is effectual and convenient.
There are two loop-bars, or staples, a a, secured horizontally on the middle ofthe cross-piece B, at a short distance from each other, and parallel.
There is just suicient space under the staples to admit the shank c, so as to slide freely between them and the cross-piece. v
v There are transverse notches b b in one side of the shankfas shown, into which the wire staples take, and thereby hold the rest at any height desired.
' By working the shank alittle sidewise, it can readily be moved up or down in the staples.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the substantially as described, for attachment to the person, and the 'head-rest C, adustable in height upon said frame, for the purpose herein specified.
' THOS. B. STOUT. Witnesses:
