To all wlwm it may concern: Y

Be it known that I, S. F. MoGowN, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of- New York, have invented a new and improved rIhread and Twine- Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, referencev being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved instrument.

Figure 2 is a front view of the same.

`Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin parts.V '4) My invention has for its object to furnish an improveddnstrument foruse as a thread-cutter for sewing-machine operators, and as a twine-cutter for those doing up packages, or for those performing other operations reqniring'the frequent use of a cutter; and

It consists in theinstrnnient constructed as hereinafter Amore fully described.

A isa ring, of sucha size as to fit upon the thumb or finger, as may be most convenient for the particular purpose for which the instrument is to be used.

The lower part of the ring, orband A, may be made -as shown in figs. l and '2, that 4is to say, made open,

one part, or half of the ring being open upon one side, and theV other half, or part open the other side, so that thering, though free ,to expand, may always -be continuous. Y Thisconstruction I prefer, when the cutter is to be Worn upon the thumb, for cutting twine, and other similar uses."

.lo the forward part of the outer, or convex side of the plate B is attached a knife, or cutter, O.

D is a guard-plate, the rear end of which is attached to the rear, part of the plate B, and which projects'up-'-v 'plate B with a screw, or other convenient means, so

that'it may be readily removed, when desired, for convenience in sharpening the knife O.

E is a spring, the rear end of which is attached to the guard D, or to the plate B, and which projects along `the knife O, to keep the thing to be cut close down upon the knife O.

The spring E may be slotted, to allow the knife 0 to pass through it, or it may be so formed. as t'o pro-- ject along the side of the said knifc. v

In this case the knife-edge should be bevelled only upon the opposite side from the spring E.

-When thus constructed, the instrument may be used 'with advantage for cutting paper, cloth, leather, Sto.

Having thus described myinvention,

I claim asI newauddesire to secure by Letters Paltllt- The thread and twine-cutter herein described, consisting of the ring A, plate B, knife O, slotted spring E, and guard D, the two latter being removable, thel whole'combined and arranged in the manner and for the purposespecied.,
