specification of :Lei-.ters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
Application filed March l1. 1907. VSerial Np. 361.667.
To @Il whomit ma concern:
Be It known lt at we, JOHN DIER and OTTOBERGMANN, both citizens of the United scaletaken upon line :vof Fig. 1.
States of America, and residents of Cincinnati, county O f Hamilton,- State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Cutters for Counters, of which the'following is a specification. Our invention relates to a cloth cutter to be'attached to the top of the counter in a dry goods. store.
' The' object of our invention is a, cloth cutter the ur.. of which facilitates the measuring and the cutting of cloth from a bolt or fell of the same, 2 l
Referring to .the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view taken inltransverse section of a counter showing a cloth 'cutter embodying our invention in side Lelevation, the full line showing theoperative position of the Icutter and the dotted line'showing the position of the same when out of use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the'same upon an enlarged Fi0. 3 is a sectional view taken upon line yy of Fig; 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view'of the way,
yshowing the joint therein which comes at the r'ear of the counter.
Referring to the parts: Secured to the counter top, A, is a horizontal T-way, B, which extends from the front tothe rear of the counter, preferably at rightangles to the -front and rear edges thereof.
At the rear of the counter, the T-way, B, has' a notch into which a tongue, b', of an auxiliary Way,
B, extends. .A pivot pin passes through the endsof the way, B, and through the tongue b. Ajlat spring, bz, is secured tothe end of' the way, B, and bears down upon the tongue,
b, with a pressure' sufficient to retain the way, B, in alinementwith the way, B, when A no weight is placed upon the auxiliary way,
B, Secured to the centerv of the T-way, B,
, is a vertical knife blade, D. Upon the way,
B, a sliding frame, is mounted. Frame, C` has In Its lower face a grooveto pass over the way, B, has'inwardly projecting flanges, c, c',
` dles the kmfeblade, To the lug, c, of
A l q f the ,slidlng frame, C, a hous1ng,lt, is plv-v oted upon a bolt, e. Housing, E, is centrally recessed at ef, and within the recess a roller, G, is journaled.- Roller, G, has its. periphery slightlygroovedzat,g, to iitV the cutting edge of the knife blade, D, and is brought in contact with the knife edge ble-l tween the legs of the guard, c3. Housing, E, hasLa handle, e2. When the cutter is not-in use, the frame, C, is positioned upon the auxiliary way, B, which lthen hangs upon'its pivot'behind the counter, as shown in dotted .line Fig. 1.
lWhen it is desired to bring the knife into use,V the auxiliary way, B, is lraised by grasping the case by its handle, c?, and the frame, G, bearing the roller'is readily pushed forward on the way, B. The way, B, is prefer-A ably located at the Zero ipoint of a yard Ineasure which is marked o upon the counter,
the knife-blade, D, registering with the Zero point. The goods to be cut are laid over the knife and the desired amount 'measured off; then bypushing the frame forward and bringing the roller, G., down upon the' goods, lthe same is cut by the action of the roller on the knife blade,..D. As the frame is pushed forward, the guard, c3, spreads the severed edges of the goods apart.'
l. The .combination-of a'counter, a horif The convenience of hav-I ing a cutter which may be brought readily zontal way for a sliding casing secured to the i counter top, a vertlcal knife blade mounted' in the way, a v,casing to slide upon the way and a roller journaled in the easing and contacting the knife blade.
2. The combination-of a counter, a waysecured to the counter, an auxiliary way secured to the rear ofthe way so .as to be dropped behind the counter, a knife blade secured vin Vthe way, a casing mounted to slide upon the way, and a roller journaled in the casing to Contact the knife blade.
