DEVICE FOR USE IN SOLDERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD J. FERNER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Use in Solderin which improvement is fully set forth in t e following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention is a convenient hand device for the use of tinsmiths, plumbers, and others when soldering, it being more particularly adapted to be used with wire solder.
The device comprises a hollow body or tank with discharge spout for holding soldering flux, and a hollow plunger for the hollow body with which to force out the flux, the
plunger having a closure for its open end and being calculated to hold within it friction matches or similar bodies or conveniences. The body of the device is further formed with end flanges between which to wind upon the body a supply of the wire solder.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be brought out and made to appear in the following description, and the novel features pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which, with the reference characters marked thereon, form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, as in use,,parts being shown in two positions by full and by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the main body taken as on the dotted line in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the plunger, detached, with the sliding closure partially withdrawn. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the outer end of the plunger as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a front-end elevation, view indicated by arrow in Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts as shown 1, in the various figures, is the body of the device it being made of any suitable material as sheet or cast metal and hollow, as shown, and in form of cross section it is preferably made oblong or flat so as not to roll when temporarily laid down out of use. This body is designed to hold asemi-fluid soldering flux, it being formed at its forward end with a' discharge spout 2 for the flux.
3 is a plunger formed to enter the space within the body 1, it being commonly made of sheet or cast metal and hollow, and also imperforate and without opening except as to its outer end which is open and normally covered by some suitable closure. 4. The plunger is removable from the body 1 and formed in cross section similar to that body, and its size is such as to freely enter and fill the body. The plunger is further formed with a transverse depression or channel 5, Figs. 2 and 4, near its inner end in which to receive a band 6 of suitable packing material to closely fit the inner surface of the body 1, so that when the'plunger is pushed inward the flux will be forced out through the spout2.
The exact manner of covering or closing the outer end of the plunger is not essential to the invention, but I prefer to form narrow outwardly-turned transverse flanges 7, Figs. 4 and 5, upon the flat sides of the plunger, at
the end, and provide a fiat sheet or plate 4;
This lip may have any size or form convenient, but it is shown as being triangular and not wholly parted from the flange 9, it being out clear on two sides only and bent back into the space between the flanges at the remaining side, substantially at right angles' with the flange, the end of the wire 10 being inserted thereunder, as shown in Fig. 1.
In use the free end of the wire, partly unwound from the body 1, is bent in an outward direction away from the body, commonly forward or over the spout 2 so as to be convenient for soldering either with a soldering iron or with flame, the solder being ap plied to the partsjust previously smeared by the fluX directed onto the same from the spout 2. a
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for use in soldering, having a hollow body for holding material, a discharge spout for the hollow body, a plunger for said body, and transverse flanges at the ends of the body giving the latter the form of a spool.
