Description

110.876,424. PATENTBDJAN.14,1908.
A. J. ALLEN.
WHEEL BLOCK.-
APPLICATION FILED 511.11.13, 1906.
ANNA J. ALLEN, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI,
WHEEL-BLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed January 13. 1906. Serial No. 295.958.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANNA J. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of St. Joseph, county of Buchanan, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Theel-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a manually-operable, road-vehicle brake, desirably actuated from the drivers seat, which shall be simple of construction, easy and positive of operation, and not liable to get out of order.
lith this object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of a brakemechanism, as fully hereinafter described in the specification, summed up in the claims, and illustrated in the drawing, in which latter:
Figure l is a side elevation of a road-vehicle, with my improved brake-mechanism applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a detached detail view of the brake-mechanism and lFig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawing in detail, l) represents a lever, conveniently disposed to the hand of the driver on the vehicle-seat, preferably working in an arc-rack (Z, and fulcrulned at d2 to the vehicle-body A.
Pivotally connected to the lower end of the lever is a horizontal shaft C, at its other end pivotally connected, as at c, to a downward-inclined rod c3, terminating in a bent, horizontally-exten(ling portion c* secured to a collar B loosely encircling the wagon-axle, or the like. Carried by the collar is a leg a, at its extremity carrying a brake-shoe A.
The operation will be apparent: In Fig. l, the road-vehicle is shown with the brakeshoe in operation, that is to say, as bearing against one of the rear vehicle-wheels, to prevent baclnvard. creeping of the vehicle when the horses come to a stop in ascending a hill. 'Vhen it is desired to elevate the brake-shoe, away from contact with the vehicle-wheel, the driver seizes the handle of lever D and swings the latter on its fulcrum cl2, the lower f extremity of the lever thus moving upward, 1 drawing with it the shaft c, the rear end of .which is consequently depressed, carrying with.it the rod c3, which. will necessarily swing upward the brake-shoe, away from contact with the wheel.
As will be obvious, if an ordinary brake is road-vehicle, my brake-mechanism may be placed on the other side, that is, on the leftside of the vehicle, and vice versa, so as not to interfere one with the other.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A brake-mechanism for road-vehicles, comprising a lever adapted to be fulcrumed to the vehicle-body, a horizontal shaft pivotally secured at one end to the lower portion of the lever, a downward-extending rod pivotally secured to the other end of the horizontal shaft and. terminating in ,a bent,
liorizontally-extending ried at the end of the horizontal, bent portion and adapted to loosely surround the vehicle-axle, a leg carried by the collar, and a brake-shoe carried at the lower' extremity of the leg. Y
2. A brake-mechanism for road-vehicles, comprising a lever adapted to be fulcrumed to the vehicle-body, an arc-rack for the lever, a horizontal shaft pivotally secured at one end to the lower portion of the lever, a downwar ilextending rod pivotally secured to the other end of the horizontal shaft and. terminating in a bent, horizontally-exten ding portion, a collar carried at the end of the horizontal, bent portion and adapted to loosely surround the vehicle-axle, a leg carried by the collar, and a brake-shoe carried at the l lower extremity of the leg.
